Duff bass recording

What's Hot
Hi all

I wonder of anyone can help with this one.

When I record a bass via my audio interface into Reaper it acquires a sort of distortion it's hard to describe which I can't get rid of. It's not a nice overdrive or anything like that, it's more of a high-frequency sort of wheezy sound. It coincides with the note's attack and decay rather than being a constant sound in the background so it's not interference from the pickups as far as I know.

Any ideas?

I could try recording via an amp and mic, but it suits me to simply plug in via the interface if possible.

  • You're probably clipping the interface. Turn the gain right down and use a pad if you have it.

  • By pad, do you mean something to mute the strings?

  • Some interfaces will have a button that says "pad" on it, some other let you choose between instrument or line level. Basically select the option with the least gain.
