JHS Pack Rat -the mystery revealed!!

What's Hot

So i popped into Guitar Guitar Camden today to test a couple of compressor pedals out.

Needed some drive pedals i was familiar with too see if the compressor was doing the right things, one pedal i wanted to try was a rat style as I’m familiar with them.

lo and behold!!! Sitting on their shelf was a black JHS rat pedal akin to the bonsai or muffuletta, about ten modes including og, white face, brat, dirty rat, keeley mod, jhs mod and a few others.

i liked it, sounded ratty, but couldn’t justify the money on a rat when i have 2 already and am pretty happy with them.

Started looking for it online and unless I’m looking in the wrong places, there’s absolutely no mention of them anywhere. I can’t remember what he’s called it, was black, had a pic of a rat on it. Just seems weird that shops in the uk would be already stocking a pedal without the usual fanfare on their channels or reviewers channels?

Strange. They used to do a Rat called the All American distortion - I have a stewmac kit they did a collaboration run of, presumably to use up the last stock of circuit boards. I think they used to sell modded Proco Rats as well.

I’ve actually just ordered a Black Mass 1312 which is exactly what you describe - a rat circuit with umpteen clipping options. But that pedal has an upside down police car on it, not a rat. I have a hot pink one in the post :)

Are you sure it was JHS?

If I didn’t have a Warthog and Rat 2 already, this would be very much on my ratty radar. Going to have to do a trawl for this one.

EDIT: I have found the square root of f***-all online about this either.

It was defo a jhs, exactly the same design as the bonsai just black with different graphics.

No idea how it’s in a shop and not a dickie bird online anywhere

I wonder if the shop has released it early by accident

  • It seems odd, they have a fairly exhaustive list of their pedals on their site. Sounds like the looks of the JHS Muffelta crossed with Zander Circuitry Cranium features

Might have to go back and at least take a photo.
They did say it’d only been received today.

They have been teasing something about a new multi mode pedal but it hasn’t been released yet. I wonder if that has missed embargo, or some such?

Josh fancies himself as a bit of a pedal historian too, so if he'd made this a while ago you'd expect it to be something he'd mention on his Youtube channel.

    This sounds plausible.

No go, can’t get up to Camden again. I guess it’ll remain a mystery until it’s officially launched?

Sure it wasn't one of those old JHS pedals (John Hornby Skewes)?

  • I'm in Camden guitar guitar part exing an amp.

It is indeed called a Packrat.

    Pics here.

Looks like they've done a modded rat with the same name before.

No mention of this one online.

Question is.... Do I buy it? I have no need for a Rat pedal.

That looks cool as hell. Does it have a price on it?
0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom
  • It's £220.

I will not be buying it....

They had no idea it was so 'exclusive'....
