When connecting to PC you need to place it in stomp mode then press the footswitch to put the unit in bypass. Quickest way is hold the foot switch down with the alt button until the three knobs flash, press the footswitch until the far right knob is flashing ( the stomp knob) then press the footswitch and alt button again. The pedal is now in stomp mode, next just click the footswitch to place the unit in bypass and you can now use the PC to trial all the sounds you want.
@gearaddict  ^ this is how to do it quickly

I just got the Tonex One today and it is probably user error but I’m struggling to get it into browsing mode. I’m clicking ALT and the footswitch but the knobs just flash and it stays in dual mode. It did work once - after I’d gone into global settings and then out again. But now it isn’t working again. And going in and out of global settings mode doesn’t affect it now. Any ideas?
You have to press and hold the foot switch and the alt button together for roughly 5 seconds, then the lights will start flashing.
I think you're thinking of holding down ALT for 6 seconds to get into setup mode? Browsing mode should just be a quick press of ALT and footswitch together. It is working now, since I did a factory reset. Thanks, though.

Against my better judgement I'm thinking of getting a Tonex One - the last thing I need or want is more options and time wasted searching/trying new sounds.

It's taken a while but I've got to the point I've got 4 or 5 amps I go to on my HX Stomp XL without thinking.

But curiousity has got the better of me...

Sounds like you don’t need a Tonex One in your life! :)

Get one. They’re brilliant and annoying bits of kit.

I have one, loved it, bought the bigger one.

it didn’t sound quite the same and it also allowed me to bugger about too much so I spent more time tweaking than playing, it also kept saying I was clipping the unit but I’ve no idea how.
This lead me to get annoyed with digital and send the unit back.

I replaced it with a Friedman IR-X , great bit of kit instantly got my sounds and I was/am  happy with it.

But here’s the rub, both a condemnation and recommendation of the Tonex One in one go.

You see,I chose the Friedman as most of the drive sounds id been using on the One where Friedman amps, so yesterday I set up an A/B pedal and f**k me if I can’t tell the difference between a £400 valve pedal and a £129 digital box! It’s crazy and that’s why I love it, with my JHS screamer in front it tightens up brilliantly and sounds ace.  I hate it at the same time because you’re kind of limited slightly on EQ and Gain by the parameters of the capture so even though I can get the sounds I want I feel constrained by it also.
I don’t honestly know if I would keep the Friedman now?

The One is simply a single button footswitch that you can set your two favourite sounds to, I’ve a slightly driven matchless as my clean and a BE100 with a Klon In front for my gain.  The only thing else I mess with normally is the main volume knob.
I’ve loaded about 8 presets on it that cover my needs (including a fantastic Dual Rec ) but it is a digital product still and it could go wrong, whereas the Friedman is a hybrid product with that valve immediacy but despite having an FX loop is more limited in sounds.

I’ve spent two days now going backwards and forwards between the one and the IR-X instead of trying to play and it’s driving me nuts.

Just wondering if anybody has used the Tonex One live? Particually into an FRFR or Fx Return.
I'm joining a tribute band that needs a mesa sound but I cant afford a Dual Rec so am looking at using a Tonex One.
    Cheers

I've used a full fat Tonex live for a few gigs. I don't think the One would be any different. FWIW, I put my mod/delay/reverb effects after the Tonex and used profiles of the same amp with different levels of captured gain for distortion sounds. I didn't use any overdrive/distortion pedals into the front and I didn't adjust the Tonex models too much. I used a clean boost after the Tonex for volume boosts. Not my normal way of working, but it got me there without too much faffing about.

I went straight into FOH and monitored myself through the floor wedges. We had a silent stage (including e-drums) so we could all share the FOH mix and hear what we needed to hear without overcomplicating things. Never tried it using an FRFR backline or with acoustic drums.

I own a Laney LFR 112 FRFR speaker that I use at home (and it's very good). I suspect it would be fine as onstage backline with drums and other backline, but you never know until you try it. The person who owned the Laney before me played in a metal band, feeding his Helix into it as backline sound, and said he was happy with it, but (IIRC) wanted to go stereo and less weight with a pair of Headrush something-or-others.

It's not my best playing experience, but it works for the audience when I can't have an amp behind me.

Yeah I've used my Tonex (pedal, not One) live in to my Fender FR-10. We've played two gigs in large halls and the FR-10 has worked perfectly for on stage monitoring, plus it has an XLR out which has went to the PA.
I use a few tones including a Mesa and it's sounded brilliant.

Yes, half a dozen gigs with it so far.  I usually use an amp but if it's logistically easier to not take an amp or it's a tiny stage then I use the One as the final pedal on my board then DI to FOH.  I don't have my own cab, just at the mercy of the monitoring.  I have a clean and dirty amp model in it and run it in toggle mode, other fx and overdrives upstream of it.  Works well.

  • Use the Tonex one live, function and corporate gigs, straight di in to front of house and folded back to monitor. Switch between Fender and Marshall (only for 3 or 4 songs) rest comes from 3 drive and boost pedals. Job done, very very happy.

You guys using these live into the PA… are you using a DI box between the Tonex and the mixer?

If not, have you experienced any issues with noise or level?

I do tend to but I'm not the most knowledgeable on these things and there will be much better people along to answer more properly. I use one because I don't like 1/4" jacks sticking up out of the mixer and I find XLR connections to be more sturdy and "locked". But also because the first time I used it, I was going into a venue's own PA in a sort of marquee tent thing and I didn't trust it so putting a DI between my kit and theirs meant that any electric damage would only blow up the DI :)

Yep ToneX One -> DI box -> balanced output to FOH desk.

  • I use di box as well.

Thanks everyone, I'm covering some Korn songs so figured a tonex with the Mesa capture is a good start rather than buying a Dual Rec. DI box is genius, hadn't even given phantom power protection a thought. Thanks for your input everyone!

I’ve not gigged it but happy with my One pedal into my Headrush FR08.
I heard a lot of good stuff about paid for captures but to be honest they sound no better than the handful of free ones available.
I only use it in A/B mode and run a clean and mid gain tones with a JHS screamer and Rat pedal before it with a delay afterwards.
Not all captures work well with the drive pedals but I’ve settled on some good sounds, including a very decent Dual Rec.

  • I’ve not gigged my ToneX One yet (it’s so far been in the top pocket of my guitar case as a backup rig for Quad Cortex).

Sonically I’be found it the same as my full ToneX, which I used a lot either direct into PA, or using my QSC K10.2 speaker in FRFR mode and it sounded killer.

In terms of running out into D.I., don’t forget the ToneX one has the ability to run stereo out. This is handy if you’re using any of the stereo effects on board the unit and wanting a wider guitar sound through the PA.

  • I've not been keeping up with this, but it's possible my band's getting back together for another one-last-gig. Has there been any movement on the new, improved software front?

    No.

    The UI is still awful.

I think it gets a bad rep.
It’s not the easiest but it’s fairly straight forward once you know its limitations.
