I've seen mentioned on here by a few people that under no circumstances would they ever wear a short sleeved shirt and would much rather roll their sleeves up.
I also noticed in the recent Mumsnet thread that was shared recently that more than one person stated that they had abandoned a date because someone showed up in a short sleeved shirt.
I was quite surprised by this as I'd never really seen this opinion shared before. I will typically switch to short sleeved shirts in summer (or t-shirts with a collar). I'm not really someone concerned with fashion and trying to look stylish so it doesn't bother me all that much, but I was wondering, what is so bad about short sleeved shirts and if this is a commonly held belief similar to socks and sandals or double denim?

Long sleeved shirts with shorts always looks odd to me.
You are right, it is in the same territory as socks with sandals, shorts with long socks pulled up, beige cargo shorts, bow ties, tracksuit top & bottoms that are the same colour etc. They are all the uniform of middle-aged Nerdville.
Mind you, I am not the right person the criticise other people's clothing. I wear band T-shirts and black cargo shorts every day at work plus ridiculous compression socks so that I don't die of Pulmonary embolism. I've never cared what others think.

a slightly oversize short sleeve casual linen shirt , untucked and a couple of open buttons at the neck is a good casual summer look.
Peculiarly old Spanish and Italian men will often wear a formal short sleeve shirt tucked into oversize shorts for oversize bellies as they go about their daily business in summer .
All manner of T shirts , Polo shirts are fine but best untucked unless you've got the guns and a good sixpack and lats
I wear short sleeve shirts pretty much exclusively, normally with a plain while t shirt underneath and a pair of jeans. I really like the classic fifties look.
I am 54 years old though, and basically don't care a fig what other people think.
Also, probably 85% of the time, roll my shirt sleeves up.
Edit: and I also would not date a man who wore a short-sleeved shirt.
Wear what you like. If you are worried about not looking cool enough, work on your waistline, not your wardrobe.
A short sleeved work shirt with a tie is just weird.

It’s all down to persona taste and preference I guess.
