Another - this is quite a rare, cool one I stumbled across on eBay, it was selling for around a grand:

    It's an Aria SH-1000, a neck-thru semi-hollow model from about 1980.

Then there was the Daion 555 Headhunter...

    I really like those.

Someone mentioned MIJ Fenders - these are some really cool ones from the mid 1980s. My dad has one of each.

@stonevibe I knew someone who had a Washburn Falcon, it was a nice axe. Tone, sustain, high fret accessibility. If you didn't like yours you should have given it to me ;)
I sold it in the early '90s with a whole bunch of other stuff. Think I might have part exchanged it for  Japanese 'Fotoflame' Strat...

    Mine looked like this.

    But with these fret inlays

Looks like the current Vox semis are a lot less original than I'd thought- that's the spitting image!

  • @stonevibe yes that's the one, although IIRC this bloke's guitar had a darker finish. deffo nice high fret access.

@daveyh It was indeed a Kay.

I believe they were built by Cort though, so I think that actually makes them Korean.

I used to have a rather nice Aria Les Paul-alike with a headstock like that (it had a matching scratchplate too and a MOP fleur de lys behind the tail piece).

Now of course, one of the most iconic Japanese guitars ever whether you like it or not, the 1987 Ibanez RG550:

I have to agree. I had an RG750, which was an amazing guitar although absolutely not for me. It did teach me that I really don't like Floyds and thin necks, and I sold it for a lot more than I paid, so it's all good.

    Just like this...

The finish was a very slightly 'pearly' white, quite beautiful.

The plainer RG550 is the most 'iconic', though.

  • Love my '88 Jem 77FP.

I don't shred (because I can't really), but it's so nice to play.

Oooh can i play please, i love old Japanese guitars :D

Here's my submission. It's an old Aria 5102T which I believe is from somewhere between 1970-1975.

It spent it's whole life living in the sun in Mexico before it made it's way to me via the Welsh Valleys. Poor bugger probably didn't know that it was possible for that much grey cloud and rain to exist over one such small area!

I love this guitar. It's never going to win any awards for playability, all though it does play pretty well. What it does have however is tons of character and absolutely loves being pushed to the point of near explosion whilst blasting through a selection of fuzz boxes.

  • ESP 400 Series Strats and Teles were great guitars, I had one of each and gigged them regularly. They had a flatter fingerboard than the Jap Fender vintage reissues which was a massive advantage IMHO. Then ESP went all heavy metal...
