Miked or Miced or Mic'd or Micd or Micced...

What's Hot

...or any other variation you can think of? Twice this morning I've read ' miked' and it seems wrong yet the alternatives don't seem much better either. But then it isn't properly a word I suppose so maybe we can write it how we like?
I couldn't decide which bit of the forum for this but have gone for Off Topic as that seems to be closest to the 'random stuff you think about when you should be doing something more useful' category.

    I vote for Mic'd....we're shortening microphone so that's got to be in?

    Mic'ing looks a bit clunky though.

    I have certainly read mike as an abbreviation for microphone before and even I know that's wrong!

    The number of times I rephrase a what I'm typing to avoid the awkwardness of using Miked or Mic'ed.

    Here's an article with a lot of persuasive writing for using Mike but it still makes me uncomfortable.

    If panic can give us panicked I see no problem with mic giving us miked. I also remember when mike was used in preference to mic.

    Fuck off, you're all mental. Mic'd is stupid. I can't see any reason why the verb to place a microphone on something needs to be spelled with a c instead of a k. Miked is much easier to read, leaves no doubt as to the pronunciation and is categorically the right thing to type. On the other hand, if you're shortening the name of the object it makes sense to maintain the "c" as that's how it's spelled.

    I used mic'ed and don't find it awkward, but mic'd is fine too.

    Anything else - especially with a k - is wrong, because it's a miss-spelling not an abbreviation, which should contain only letters that are in the full word, with an apostrophe to signify missing letters. [/pedant] :)

    More importantly "mike" or "miked" is just far too Smashy 'n' Nicey.

    There you go. If you spell it mic'd then you are implying the word is "microphoned" which looks daft. I microphoned you up? Nah, I miked you up with a microphone. Miked is a different word that encompasses the action of deliberately placing a microphone on a source. It's not an abbreviation.

    @Panama_Jack666 not a chance laddie.
