1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
Yamaha FG-180 (Made in Taiwan, 1972,) for $60 from the sister of a girl I was dating in 1988. My first electric was a Gibson ES335 Studio Dot Neck 1987 in ebony; bought in 1991.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
My Baker B-1H. Once I sell that, my Gibson Midtown Standard Bass.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
1972 Yamaha FG180 (Made in Taiwan). Next is my 2001 Gene Baker-original B-1H.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
    A microphone Heil PR40.

5: What strings do you use?
Bass guitar: GHS Precision Flats, D'addario Half-Rounds

    Upright: D'addario Helicores

Electric: D'addario EXL140s (Nickel Wound, light top, Heavy bottom: 10-52).

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
They can always be better. Can always use more practice before performing.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
    Bathroom, being over 50...

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Either packing up or getting a beer depending on circumstance.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
I've been known to drop a beat here and there. Maybe play 5th -- or (worse) 3rd or (even worse) perfect 7th -- instead of the root on the 'one'. Just have to shrug it off and keep thumping.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Play more. Focus mightily on establishing repertoire.

What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

Got a Saehan Acoustic when I was 14. Couldn't even begin to play it right-handed, so restrung it for being a lefty. Action was hilarious - strings resting about half a mile from the fretboard. My fingers never forgave me for it.

The Building's burning down - what one guitar do you save?

Cut-and-shut strat; 90's korean body and american standard righty neck w/ maple board. Rio Grande and Seymours. It plays magnificently.

What's the oldest guitar that you own?

That one. I only seem to ever seem to have two functional guitars at any given time.

And the next piece of gear you'd like to acquire?

I really need a 4x12 with decent speakers; and better valves for the Egnater I use in the house, and another strat, and...

    What strings do you use?

D'Addario. I really like Rotosounds but the tone used to disappear from them after a week.

If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?

The bit before the recording where I wasn't pressing enough on the point of 'it's worth spending more money just to get the drums done in a better (and bigger) room'.

What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?

    Having a fag.

    ...And five minutes after?

    Having a fag.

What's the worst thing that's ever happened to you onstage?

It's a tie; having my amp get through both a soundcheck and a line-test okay, only to blow valves within twenty seconds of an opening number, and without spares (no other two-guitar bands on the bill), having to play through the PA. From early-days, standing two feet away from a Jazz Chorus while the tremolo oscilated away. In a small basement venue in the middle of summer - something to do with the stage levels, the heat and the oscilation meant I had to take periodic rests against my cabinet to stop myself from keeling over and fainting. Weirdly, I've never so much as broken a string on stage.

What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

    Listen to more soul.

  • What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

My first guitar was an Aria strat copy. I was maybe 13 or so at the time. I still have it, although it's now a partscaster.

The Building's burning down - what one guitar do you save?

It's a tricky one, but I think probably my Nashville Tele.

What's the oldest guitar that you own?

    1996 Robert Cray strat.

And the next piece of gear you'd like to acquire?

Ooh... well, a Wampler Paisley Drive is on the list.

    What strings do you use?

DR Tite-fit 9.5 gauge, Ernie Ball Super Slinkies (regulars on one guitar), and Earthwoods for acoustic. Sometimes use Elixir.

If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?

I often seem to change my mind about the choice of guitar the following day..

What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?

I'm generally doing sound duties at gigs rather than being onstage.

    ...And five minutes after?

But still everyone needs that 5 minutes to wind down before packing down.

What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

Practise plugged into an amp whenever possible! For a long time I used to practise and play unplugged, and it was quite different when I plugged in. Even now, I still find myself playing quite lightly with a loud amp.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it? Harmony kind of like a Les Paul, but bolt on neck, no binding, plain black very rudimentary body profiling. £65 from second hand shop in Leeds, 1983. 2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save? I love them all, but they are replaceable, so probably the most valuable one, a Gibson ES330. 3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own? 1989 Yamaha FG420. 4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire? Pre-CBS Fender Strat or Jag. 5: What strings do you use? Elixir on both acoustic and electric. 6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be? That I'd learned how to record first. 7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage? If it's a band gig I'm warming up my amp, tuning (again), waiting for everybody else to come back from the bog, and generally wishing we could crack on. If it's solo or duo acoustic, drinking heavily and wishing I'd practiced more. 8: ...And five minutes after? If it's a band gig I just chill and chat for a bit. If it's acoustic I'll be waiting for the shaking to subside. 9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage? Long story short, a cymbal stand fell over and the threaded bit on the end of it just caught the top of my Lowden. Thankfully the ding was only cosmetic, but it couldn't be repaired invisibly, and the guitar was perfect up to that point. 10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar? Relax. Relax. Relax.

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
An unplayable acoustic given to me by my aunt and uncle in 1969. I was very frustrated I couldn't play barre chords. I don't think I could play barre chords on that guitar now. The action was insane. Then I got a weird looking Orbit 3 electric a year later.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
My HSS Fender Strat with S1 switching. Someone once asked me which guitar I'd want if I could have any guitar in the world and this is the one for me. I've never played a better more versatile guitar. The bridge humbucker and the S1 switching means I can get any sound I want from it.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
A Fender Strat Plus. The one with the gold lace sensor pickups. As someone once said to me, those noiseless pickups are all very well but it doesn't really sound like a Strat. I must change the pickups one day. I didn't hang on to my older guitars before this one.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
Not sure. Probably some more Jazz 3 Ultex picks. The ones that look like fungal toenails.
Also, I've reached that stage in life (i.e. old) where I feel the need for a Telecaster in my life.

5: What strings do you use?
009 Super Slinky on my Strats,
010 Regular Slinky on my Les Paul and PRS.
012 Martin SP on my acoustic
Elixir Nanoweb on my 5 string bass

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Go back and fix slight timing/phrasing  errors. But I always think that.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Checking my tuning, probably for the 10th time. Not sure why because my Strat is pretty good at staying in tune.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Sitting down, if I can, to rest my back

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Playing the Larry Carlton solo to Kid Charlemagne, which I'd learned note for note. We had loads of deps in the band and the backing went wrong and I didn't know the changes well enough to improvise my way out of it. My blues/rock licks couldn't save me. Never again, If the chords are a bit tricky, I always make sure I can improvise over them, in the event something goes wrong.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Be more open minded about other styles. When I started, I only wanted to be like Paul Kossoff, but at least it did wonders for my vibrato :)

    Pete
    It's not a competition.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
A Sakura DN16 acoustic from Ivor Mairants bought for £45 in May 1982. Still got it, although it's pretty ropey. I do dig it out and play it once in a while though.
2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
That would be a traumatic decision to have to make, but I'd probably save the 63 reissue ES-335 that my wife bought for my 40th - it's a beautiful instrument, but also has that extra sentimental value
3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
That same old acoustic, although I recently sold my oldest, which was a 72 Rickenbacker 4001
4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
I'm finding it very difficult to ignore Japanese double bound 63 telecasters in lake placid blue. I have three telecasters, so I can't really say I'm in need, but those things are gorgeous.
5: What strings do you use?
Recently converted to Elixirs on all the electrics - they're twice the price, but last four times as long.
6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
I just want to do more recording - and do a better job of it than I have in the past
7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Being offensive to my band mates while they're being offensive to me. It's a major part of the fun of being in a band!
    8: ...And five minutes after?
Packing up cables and putting away kit. Let's get on with it.
9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Playing bass in a high speed soul band, I broke my A string. No replacement strings, no spare guitar, 14 songs still to do. I have never had to work so hard, and I've never gigged without a spare since!
10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Practice more, and don't think you're deficient cos you're not Steve Vai. If I hadn't been obsessed about technical proficiency as a youngster I'd have been a lot braver.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    the '52 Gibson
4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
    An archtop acoustic
5: What strings do you use?
John Pearse on my Electrics, D'Addario on my Acoustics and mandolins
6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
spend more time on the original takes
7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Glass of water and hit the toilets
    8: ...And five minutes after?
Talking to the audience and a pint
9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you on stage?
forgetting what key to play a solo
10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
If the crowd is entertained, you've done your job.
