  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
First acoustic was a crappy nylon string one that my Dad brought back from Spain about two decades before I got hold of it – you can imagine what a player that was! First Electric was a Jim Deacon Strat that my Mum and Dad bought me for Christmas when I was 14, which I still have, okay so I’ve modded the shit out of it but it’s basically still the same wood (mostly).

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
My first Hugh Manson custom from 1991 – still my main guitar and very little even comes close in terms of sound.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
1976 Fender Strat – made the same year as me

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
Oh man – only one, but there is so much! Synergy SYN-002 preamp, Friedman HBE and Egnater Armageddon modules is it – hopefully this year!

5: What strings do you use?
    D’Addarrio XL 10-46’s in E, 11-50’s in D.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Record with more amps and blend the suckers.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Shiting myself, tuning, trying to remember the first riff – if I can just get through that one everything else is alright from then on in!

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Wiping down the guitars, and packing before some scumbag steals something, while thinking about the drink I’m hoping to get in the next five minutes.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Oh man, falling off the stage in Edinburgh, been hit with a pint of piss, upset a crowd of about 5,000 bikers in Anglesey, the list goes on – but at least they don’t forget me.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Practise more you lazy bastard, honestly, oh yeah and do it to a bloody metronome! But even more than that get out there any play live at every opportunity.

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
I've no idea what year.  1989/1990 (13/14) and it was something like a Lorenzo Songbird - a Gibson Hummingbird rip-off.  Strangely, I've not thought of that for decades (I've just turned 40 within the last week) and the name came to me in a flash.  Odd.  First electric was soon after: a Marlin Slammer in Hank Marvin red and white.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
Not too fussed.  I'm insured - but, it would have to be the unique hand-painted Strat Plus 50th anniversary.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    The Strat from 1995/1996.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
I played a mate's HSS metallic sunburst Strat Deluxe with noiseless pickups last night.  It was delightful and would steal it from him in a flash.

5: What strings do you use?
Gibson, Rotosounds, D'Addario, whatever.  I'm yet to be persuaded that any are so much distinctly better.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
I'd sing this album in a key I'm more comfortable in (lower)

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
    Pacing around.  Quick piss.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Pacing around.  Avoiding people because I find it hard to accept praise (which is, needless to say, effusive...ahem).

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Me.  In a strop.  Screaming.  Ugh.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Nothing.  I'm a decent player.  I enjoy it and I could and would never want to be a shred master.

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
First guitar was a cheap, nylon strung acoustic - around 1971.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
Although my favourite guitar is a self built David Gilmouresque Black Strat, I could rebuild that - so I'd save my Lowden O25.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
1974 Framus 3/355 (strat copy) that I renovatd last year.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
I have a carved body and neck on order from a proper luthier on which I'll add the finish, electrics and hardware. I can't wait to see what the top grade flame maple top looks like when it's finished.

5: What strings do you use?
9s or 10s - often D'add, often something else. To be honest I'm not sure I can tell the difference on an electric.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
I'd be able to sing in tune.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Worrying about whether my fingers can remember what they're supposed to be doing.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Having a drink, and realizing that although I know I cocked up the start of a solo - no-one in the audience noticed.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
I haven't spent enough time on stage for anything bad to have happened (yet).

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Practice - not obsessively, but do practice. Oh, and don't give up piano lessons just because your teacher is an old fart, you'll regret it in later life. (I do.)

As seen in “Guitarist” magazine. We did this twice on MR, but I thought it might be fun to do it again, seeing as we’re now over here, and the questions have changed:

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it? It was a cheap acoustic bought at Thompsons Piano Store in Glasgow in 1972 £15.50. I paid it up from my paper round.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save? I have 16 guitars so this is difficult. 2007 Martin Marquis OM28 Madagascar.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own? Yamaha SG 2000 Deep Purple Edition 1981.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire? Collings OM2H

5: What strings do you use?
For electric, Fender pure nickel. For acoustic Elixir Nanoweb.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
    I don't record.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage? Don't gig.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Large drink, I think. If I play in my local it will be drinking a pint.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage? Nothing bad

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar? Just enjoy it.

    Wonderful playing and singing!
Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

  • 1 - i got my first guitar when I was 14. My old man had an ancient and almost impossible to play acoustic. After I broke that for the fourth or fifth time he gave me £50 to buy one of my own. I got it from a second hand shop in town. I can't remember the make -but it was an appalling Les Paul type thing with unbelievably high strings and a neck that felt like a bannister. Horrible!

2 - If the building is burning down I'd abandon the guitars! Much more important stuff to grab before those things!

3 - Including bass and acoustic I have seven guitars. The oldest is probably my epiphone acoustic. I've had it for over fifteen years.

4 - I am always looking to acquire 'gear' - vintage synths are a savage hobby. Guitar wise I am looking for a new amp at the moment. Maybe Roland JC120?

    5 - Ernie ball 9's

6 - One of the exciting and mystifying things about listening to records is the 'how the hell did they do that' thing. That magic is lost on your own recordings. You can see the workings. Its why food always tastes better when someone else has made it for you.

7 -  Five minutes before I go on stage I am usually arriving!!!

8 - getting into trouble at then earlier opportunity

9 - At a 50th birthday party at a scooter club there was fight. There was no stage, we were playing on the dance floor - people where rolling around on the floor - my lead was pulled out of my guitar, then I was pulled over. That was amusing. I was sick on stage once (Well just off to the side) . I tried to stand on my amp one drunken night to jump off it - but lost my balance, Me and the amp fell over.

10 - it would've been useful to learn some theory!

  • My first guitar was a Kay acoustic when I was about six, so over 35 years ago. I still have it...

The building’s burning down – at present I'd save my Fender Telecaster HH.

Oldest Guitar? I own two guitars from 1992, a Japanese Fender Stratocaster and a Gordon Smith Gypsy .

New kit - I'm looking to get a new Fender Bassbreaker Amp, the 18/30 combo.

Use D'Addario XL 10's for normal playing.

Change recording - I am struggling trying to find the right pedal to mimic Black Eyed Peas, "I've got a feeling"

Five minutes before onstage - Mentally playing the first song and not drinking alcohol

Five minutes after?  A few pints and a chat with the blokes.

Worst thing - The multi-effects unit I WAS using (stupid Boss ME-80) kept wildly changing volumes between songs and I was having to correct it manually. Very annoying. I sold it and went back to good old pedals...

Advice - Learn scales prolifically and all those years playing bass were worth it, but try to play rhythm earlier.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

A "Starforce" guitar which was a Fender Super Strat copy complete with star inlays a la Richie Sambora and an awful Floyd Rose Copy Bridge which broke strings on a regular basis. It was my Xmas present in1989.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?

Probably my 1991 Ibanez RG770 which I got about 18 months after my first guitar having proved to my parents that playing the guitar wasn't just a flash in the pan. Having discovered Satch & Vai I desperately wanted a JS or a Jem but didn't have enough for that and a decent amp so the RG it was - and I played it to death.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    Said RG770.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
I've convinced myself "I'm done" but probably a Strat, an SG or a Midtown Custom.

5: What strings do you use?
    Ernie Ball or D'Addario 10's.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
I only have recordings of covers with my band, so not really applicable.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
If there's a room we can go to then just warming up running up and down the fretboard - otherwise chatting to mates who've bothered to turn up.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
A JD & Coke, chatting to mates while keeping one eye on our gear.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
At the beginning of the 2nd song at our first gig (And my first in over 20 years) My guitar cut out, I had a feeling it was the power to my tuner so while the band played on I was under my pedal board ripping out wires. It felt like forever but I was up & running again in about 10 seconds. Took our bassist several songs to recover though as it was his first time ever playing live and he shit a brick.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
While being self taught works for some, it will only get you (me) so far, so take some lessons, learn some theory and practise really expressing yourself on the guitar rather than trying to emulate everybody else

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

My first guitar was a 20th anniversary sunburst squier strat. It was a birthday present in March 2002. I still have it to this day, all be it with every part changed, re-fret, pickups, custom wiring, tuners etc...

5: What strings do you use?

    D'Addario NYXL

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Having the space and time to mic up a cranked amp everytime!

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?

    Chatting & Warming up.
    8: ...And five minutes after?

    Beer...

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
The normal stuff... cutting out, electric shocks, drinks on pedals!

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

Practice, practice, practice... and... SIGHT READING IS IMPORTANT!

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
Framus of some sort, really old and beaten up, got it in 1994.
2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
    Gibson LP Standard
3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    Charvel Avenger
4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
Gibson LP Custom. But am generally quite tired and worn out from all the GAS :-/
5: What strings do you use?
Pyramid 12-60 for my gigging guitar, whatever for the rest.
6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Being able to have more time for recording.
7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Drinking something and checking out the females in the audience.
    8: ...And five minutes after?
Same as 5 minutes before the gig, plus shaking a bit from adrenaline rush and shortage of breath.
9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Had a lot of funny stuff going on, guess the worst was when I was so drunk I fell into my amplifier 2 times during the gig...and being the only guitar player in the band.
10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Either to learn to lay properly, or not bother to learn much, or ANY theory at all. Have been writing songs much easier and natural when I wasn`t thinking if a certain note "fits" into a certain scale.

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
A white Sunn Mustang Strat with strings about a mile off the fretboard.
2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
Rickenbacker 360, purchased in 1997 and now retired from live use.
3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    See above.
4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
Probably a Lehle ABY switcher to go between my Vox AC15 and my new Orange AD15.
5: What strings do you use?
    Ernie Ball or D'Addario 10 - 42.
6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
    EQ my sound better.
7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Waiting for everyone else in the band to stop messing around with their stuff.
    8: ...And five minutes after?
Congratulating myself on a job well done. Or probably packing all my gear away.
9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Nothing too major that I can remember. Probably breaking a string on my main guitar and having to get a bass player to restring it for me.
10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Stop worrying about the right gear, stop trying to emulate The Bluetones guitar sound from their first album, stop playing jingle-jangle and learn to play properly.

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
Depending on perspective; a Hohner Arbor Series LP copy I borrowed from my dad (never to return), or the Westone Thunder IIA I part-ex'd it for.  That Westone was actually a great guitar, and I wish I still had it, but it eventually went to fund an Epi Les Paul, which in turn part funded my Gibson.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
My Les Paul.  Bought it new in 2002.  We've been through a lot together.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
1967 Gibson SG Special.  You know, the Live At Leeds/Woodstock guitar.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
A black Les Paul Custom.  This was the guitar I always wanted, but could never quite justify the expense. "Settled" for a sunburst Standard.  Still really want that black Custom though.

5: What strings do you use?
11-48.  Usually Ernie Ball, but sometimes Rotosound or D'addario, depending on what I can pick up for cheap at guitar shows!

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Record more!  Record everything!  So many things I've done that are lost to the mists of time.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Washing my hands.  Gotta have clean hands.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Breaking down my gear.  Do you people really all have road crew?!

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Too much to drink.  I peak at one-and-a-half pints of Guinness.  Anything more than that and it's a wash of flubbed notes and missed cues.  Swigging from a bottle of Jack before a show,
a la mid-70s Jimmy Page, is definitely not recommended.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Work on that right hand.  When you're a lefty playing right handed, there are some things that really take a lot of work, but you'll get there if you practise.  Conversely, you can do things with vibrato and bending that others really struggle with, recognise this strength.  Also, sing.  It'll be so much easier to get things moving if you can cover that yourself.

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

I got a Sunburst Fender Squier Stratocaster as a Christmas gift in 1995. I still have it, but it's on loan to my grandfather at the moment.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?

My Cherry Red Gibson ES335. I think it holds more sentimental value than my other guitars. I'd be screwed if most of them went up in smoke, but even my custom Daemoness, I could get the same spec built again.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    The Squier I mentioned above.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
Boring, but I want to get a nice road case for my FX8.

5: What strings do you use?
    D'Addario NYXL

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
    More guts.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
    Setting up and panicking.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Going over the set in my head and packing down.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Back in the day, we got booked to play at our local college for their music department's event planning course. The lecturer cut the power to the stage over a disagreement he'd had with our singer just moments before we went on. We were about 12 seconds into the set. He got a mic launched at his chest, loads of abuse, and we humiliated him in front of his students.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

Play along with records. Get a realistic routine (no matter how short) and do at least that every day.
