This is the 7th SOLO of the Month (SotM) Challenge, being run by @Antique_Guitars and @TTony.

The idea is that we give you a new backing track to solo over every month, the backing track will be a maximum of 1.5mins long and you will have to download the track from soundcloud and record your solo over the top of it and then submit it to us.

The challenge is now open, and remains open for submissions until 24th September.

All you have to do is ...
  • Download the backing track and record you solo over the top of it.
  • Challenge opens on the 1st of every month, and closes on the 24th of the month.
  • Voting opens on the 25th of the month, and closes on the last day of the month, when the winner will be announced.

Here is this months backing track (you can download it from soundcloud)

Specs: African influenced (westernised) world music in E

Blimey. What happened to "This is a blues riff in B, watch me for the changes, and try and keep up"?

    :-P

  • Love the backing track - no idea what I'll play over it though.

I need to keep up with these better than I have been doing.  They definitely push me out of my comfort zone.

Now that my emotional state is finally getting back into some semblance of normality after several months of major headfuck*, I'll do my best to get something done for this.

    * Yep, what else, women problems. You'd think after all the Blues song written about it that it would actually help. Believe me, it doesn't!

  • All I can think of is Paul Simon's Gracelands... would be a really interesting one to try, but given my current RSI I am not sure I will be able to enter this month :(

Looking forward to other's efforts immensely though..

Not my sort of track at all. Guaranteed to make me sound more lame than usual!

I think I've got something, now all I need to do is practice it for a month.

  • Had a spare evening and the RSI turned out to be something else, so managed to sneak in an entry.. not happy with it, but this was a hard one to do, so good enough,

Sent mine in. It's my poor attempt at a highlife (soukos?) style guitar. Good fun, even if it did tie my fingers in knots.

    Arrghhh!

Tonight's the night, I've been struggling with the transition over to recording on my laptop so I either need to sort that out or just do it on my iPad.

  • So, I've just submitted my entry.  I found it quite difficult to lock into the vibe on this.

Unfortunately I didn't have very much time for this one and coupled with learning to record and use a DAW (I got help recording the last 2 solos) it's not a great effort. Basic melody and repetition I'm afraid.  Still, I promised myself I'd enter every month........

Looking forward to listening to everyone's take on this now mine's in.

Out of interest, how do people record their solos?  DI into an interface/DAW? Mic'd up amps?  For me, it was DI into an old mbox 2 mini and then into Studio One 3 (the free one at the moment).
