Guitar Lending Club

What's Hot
TTonyTTony Frets: 27497
There are so many guitars that I see or hear about and think "oooo, I fancy one of those".  But I don't / daren't actually buy them because;
- I've more guitars than I need already.
- I've more guitars than I want already.
- I'd probably be left trying to sell it on at a huge loss after 6 months because most of the things I fancy are a bit unusual
- MrsTT has the patience and tolerance of a saint, but apparently even a saint's patience isn't infinite.

We need some sort of lending library for guitars.

I know similar things have been suggested before, and that any scheme is fraught with problems.

But car clubs do it (I'm thinking of the clubs for exotic cars where everyone gets to drive a Lamborarri DB12 for a week every year, and a Jagsche XFR for a month, etc) and driving cars is a lot more risky than playing guitars, so is it possible?

Would I pay £50/yr and know that I'd have a Feline for a month, and a Sabre for a month and a (insert guitar-of-choice here) for a month?

Yup, probably.

I would love to do this, only prob I can see is delivery.
Having said that, having a plethora of guitars to play then getting your own back in the end, will def be a gas killer and would make you appreciate your own when it comes back.

Count me in, :) Im sure EVERYBODY would love to try the strandberg, plus it's not got a headstock that would break via courier :)

Aye, like the A90 south over the bridge ;)
I'm from Edinburgh too, but have nothing worth contributing to such a scheme.

Actually, I do quite like the design and would be interested in trying one.

But would I buy one?  No way ....

Delivery is a risk, and a cost.

Or we could try to schedule-in a little club meet-up somewhere central every other month.  Meet-up, play, eat, drink, chat, swap guitars around, go home.

If you take a guitar, you commit to returning it, one way or another, in time for the next meet-up.

  • maybe try something broken into regions?
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

It sounds a great idea, but as I've only got one cool guitar (thanks to the chaps here) I'd be worried that I'd end-up being the one that turns up everytime and everybody tries to avoid, like going to a wife-swapping club when you are married to a gomper that you spend all your time trying to pimp off and convince the other members that it is faux relicification rather than hard worn miles on the clock. Though I suppose I could buy another guitar, that's a thought.

    So, err, sounds good.

With all the delay I favour I'd get too many 'late' fines....

Makes sense logistically, but the corresponding risk is that the guitars that you really want to borrow isn't in your region.

Or maybe we just have national meet-ups once a year (with swapping between regions) and regional meet-ups in the intervening months.

Sped read this- thought it said 'religions...."

First thought was: 'Who wants a fucking sitar?'

If you could do a quick setup on it while you have it that would be great ;)

Either borrowing off mates who you trust or having meet ups in a rehearsal space seem like the best ideas to me.

There is no way I'd lend a guitar out to a stranger over the Internet, and I would not want to borrow one either. It's too open to abuse.

  • There's somebody who runs this kind of thing for a living, or at least was as we had a Discussion about it. Now, if someone can go back through the last three years of Discussions and find the link...
