I'm also not a fan of Seymour's P90s. I had a pair in a LP Special and they were muddy in comparison. Great with dollops of gain (especially with Marshall style fizzy grit) but lacked the clarity of a good P90. Also sounded flat and a bit generic clean.
All of these things are so subjective though!
The best I can explain it is to say it's like the difference between an MP3 at 192k compared to the CD you ripped it from. The Wilkinson sounded good, but the Jin-go had more quality, clarity & detail.

As you commented here thought I would trouble you for a bit more info on the Diesel Tap says to order but not much else in the way of info. Have you gone off the idea a bit as there seems to be a few of us looking for P90 at the moment and there are an endless choice these days. So does the tap take if from classic to something a bit hotter.
regards jez
I am actually interested in OCP Diesel Tap might cover a bit more ground.
A bit extreme I grant you ... but fun all the same!

Which exact model SD pickups does the JA Telecaster have? Are the neck and bridge positions both lacklustre?
If the bridge position pickup is an SP90-1b and it lacks drive into a valve amplifier, steal an idea from PRS Guitars and replace it with the SP90-3n Custom. (Yes. You read correctly. Use a neck position pickup in the bridge position.)

How does your JA Tele sound unplugged? This will (and should) influence your choice of replacement pickups.
Think I need something with a lower winding
Really they are are very good though and I love P90's. Cleaner than my BKP queens set but can handle a bit of dirt.
