That i can do what I've always done.

Did a 3hr exam yesterday to get a bit of paper to confirm that i apparently know what i'm doing. It now says i'm a professional at Digital Marketing and stuff.  And it only cost £2000! Bargain!

From now on you will refer to me as Mr. Luttis the Professional.

  • Excellent! I always chuckle when the odd (very!) colleague at work puts B.Sc. (Hons) in their sig. But if it gets you more pay, or sex, or both, then all's good!

Is he old, coming from the days when having an Honours degree was a rare and honourable thing? It does seem strange today, when almost anyone can get a first in Spice Girl Studies from the University of Previously Polytechnic.
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)
Seriously: If you value it, take/fetch it yourself

    Congrats Luttis!
I worked with a fella who always signed off with the full load of letters a la Rimmer in Red Dwarf.  Must have a dozen different sets on there which I always felt pointed to some kind of insecurity and need for validation.  He ended up joining a cult.

    Which course was that?

I'm a consultant specialising in marketing software, so would be interested...!

I have no intention of adding extra letters to sign off, but i do get to add a fancy pants badge to Linkdin...  :)

@merlin Luc Besson's got nothing - as i'm now a professional i'll be self directing the epic saga.

@FarleyUK it's a DMI course done through Business Consort. Think i was called something like "professional diploma in digital marketing"

I've been working in digital marketing for 5ish years, but had no qualifications other than a traditional marketing degree from 10+ years ago.. Was kinda pointless tbh, but i needed the bit of paper to prove i do what i do..

Ha! We've actually had a few PhDs who never even bothered to advertise that fact :)

There are times when it's useful to let the person you're dealing with know that you know, and times when it's best not to let them know that you know.

Some people have hangups about education, so if they see a set of degree or postgrad postnominals they'll think bad things about the person.

It's the DMI one, Digital institute of Marketing rather than CIM. I thought about the CIM one but digital more relevant to my field.

Well done! I couldn't afford that myself though. I'm a graphic designer so I could probably forge one for free.

Is he old, coming from the days when having an Honours degree was a rare and honourable thing? It does seem strange today, when almost anyone can get a first in Spice Girl Studies from the University of Previously Polytechnic.
A professor (and former head of department) at Greenwich has so many letters after his name, we were surprised he even bothered with BSc, but it's still there... After his name is "CITP CEng PhD BSc CQSW CSS RGN RMN" (from our public facing staff pages) and even with all of that, he doesn't include the (Hons) bit

  • I quite like the fact that no-one in the UK really bothers with showing off their letters. Mainly because I haven't got any...adding my A level grades as "B" for General Studies and "E" in History isn't that impressive.

Out of idle curiosity I just looked some of those up... In addition to being a chartered engineer, PhD doctor, chartered IT professional, he's also a registerd nurse, a mental health nurse, and a fully qualified social worker...

With that sort of back story he's either a superhero or the ultimate finalist for Britain's Got Talent

Haha me too, my photoshopfu is strong :) One of the joys in life is being paid to play with Photoshop!

Company paid for it though, would and could never pay for that myself.

I thought 'PhD' was a sexually transmitted disease... always wondered why they were so willing to boast about in on paper

Seriously, most manufacturing co's in the USA will only employ young PhDs and altho damn smart they have no practical experience in the real world. All the 40 yr service guys laid off so now nobody knows diddly squat about they are doing.

Congrats OP on attaining your pro status, hope it doubles your income for more GAS

Thanks and me too! But doubtful it will change anything in my current job, I'm an overworked one man marketing team for a local authority business with a training budget and personal development boxes they need to tick.
It does open up future employment prospects though, a lot of digital marketing can be picked up on the job with a fair amount of common sense and general business knowledge. I now have the bit of paper that puts me slightly above most other digital marketers for no reason other than a bit of paper..

  • Y'know, it's a source of much mirth in our house that my wife is actually more qualified for my field of work (IT) than I am, and she's a trainer/assessor in the care industry. OK, so her IT qualification is the ECDL, but even so...I haven't actually taken a single course or qualification since I left university. Not that I'm proud of being relatively uneducated, it's just that I never saw such things as particularly useful since they always seem to teach courses at the wrong pace and it's never been a bone of contention when I've gone for a job.

Still, congratulations on being able to prove what you already knew :D
