Try an iron on the damaged area before clamping flat, then run thin superglue in once cooled.
If all all else fails, paint the top a funky colour

@lonestar it is a solid top so i did consider removing a bit off the whole top. I think the top is screwed on so absolute worst case I think I can swap it round front to back and hide the damaged bit under a big model train we have on the other side. I'd rather fix it as best I can though.
but if it’s solid you can just take off a bit more... I would use a cabinet scraper rather than sanding
