i think that's what separates a lot of singers from guitarists. some people (myself included) play guitar because they don;t want to have to be the one who has to look the audience in the eye.
having a guitar to look down at and fiddle with is a good excuse to be up there and making a big noise without having to deal (actual eye contact) with anyone who might be listening.

I used to definitely be a Tele man, and the Strat was very much bought on a whim. However, I’m now preferring the versatility of the Strat and how ‘fluid’ it sounds compared to the more percussive nature of a Tele.
