It's nicer in the flesh than in my pics mate.

Just a quick update, I want to get on this (and my kit build!) but my house is currently in the process of being completely rewired so there's literally nowhere to work on it that isn't full of things already.
    Don't worry - it'll be worth waiting for, @hobbio ...

  • @hobbio As Andy said, it'll be worth the wait. All good things are.

    Sooo, quick update.

I've restrung it with d'addario 10's and oiled the fretboard. Now it's had time to settle it actually plays really well. No fret buzz and I've got the action within spec.

I'm at a loss as to how I could improve it? I mean, obviously I could change the pups but to what? The P90's that are on it sound good and are quiet. I have neither the funds nor the inclination to chuck a set of Gibson or Lollars in.

I'll still probably end up giving it a fret job, but to be honest I'm just enjoying playing it as is and I don't need or want the action to be so low that I could fret a note just by blowing on the strings. I'll also give it a new set of neck screws at some point, and perhaps swap out the tuners to a set of Squiers I have kicking about.

The biggest challenge is finding things to mod...

    Sounds good.

Is the back of the neck finished in satin or gloss? If the latter, I've found cutting the finish back to matt improves the feel and playability no end. Quick and easy to do with some wet/dry paper or a Scotchbrite pad. Masking off at the nut/ heel with masking tape gives a tidy transition line between the gloss and matt.

    It's satin already :)

I'd probably like the action a touch lower, which will happen after I've given it a fret job, but otherwise I'm a bit stumped.

Perhaps I'll fit a cheapo Bigsby copy...

  • This is one of the most beautiful looking Tele's I've ever seen and the fact that it's not an expensive Fender etc is amazing. It's looks just too good.

It does look pretty, you're right there mate. Here's a couple more pics, I really like the back and the abalone fret markers:image

And here's inside the f-hole and where the action is currently sitting:

It'll come good and be a player though.
Are you keeping the weird fish "ghost" ? ;)
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

I'm sure if Thomann put your pictures on their website they'd sell more of these!

That looks amazing.  I sorely tempted.....  Since I sold my gold top I've always wanted something with P90s

Could you trim the headstock down to make it a true fender shape?

No I meant your pictures are good realistic ones! :) The ones one Thomann always make the colouring look anemic.

@Chalky lol, I thought you were taking the piss! I'll still get some better ones up as soon as I get some decent light, it was proper shit and overcast here all day.

@daveww I might have a look at the headstock but I wouldn't want to make it look like a Fender one. I'd only want a Fender headstock on a real Fender (or my Squiers :) ).

  • The headstock is too narrow to do a "real" fender shape. You can get pretty close though, I've sanded the point off mine to round it out a bit. It's not quite right, but I think it looks a wee bit better.
