I've ended up with totally smooth bare wood. There are a couple of very slight scorch marks left, but I'm cool with that.
In fact I'm actually pretty excited at the prospect of having such a pretty guitar.
Front.

Next trip oil & working out my wiring dilemma.
Is it possible that a noob like me is making a rather nice looking guitar?

I decided to do a mock up of the finished article.

Still on the to do list:
More oiling
Cut pick guard
Wiring
Reshape head some more
Remove HB logo
Make & apply my own logo- I'm thinking a water slide under more truoil. I have two daughters, so a Freya Elliecaster seems appropriate.
What do you think?

Tonight... Wiring. Hopefully.
Edit: wiring almost done.
Positions 1- eldred wah
And 3- vol no tone
Sound great! (Position 1 with drive is EPIC).
Think I've shorted a circuit in position 2- "normal tele bridge". I don't have tone control- it sounds the same as position 3.
I'll figure it out tomorrow.
I also recut a pick guard from my last spare Springsteen vinyl. MUCH better effort this time.
Here's the final result:

Another of the body.

Finally a close up of the guard.

To cut the LP I took an old soldering tip and flattened it with a hammer, shaped it by grinding it to form a rudimentary knife edge. I reinstalled it to the iron & it cut well.
I then shaved the edges with a scalpel & finally sanded gently with my dremmel.
Overall I'm very happy with the result. It's not a pristine finish, but all the marks show the work I put in.
The only other thing I MIGHT do is to apply a decal, but I'm undecided. So for now that's it. I'm just going to enjoy playing it.
It performed admirably & got several compliments over both the look and tone.
I still find the tone bypass option a bit harsh, but only use that for brief solos, where the extra bite is welcome.
I spent most of the time in "Eldred" or "normal with the tone rolled off a bit" modes.
Overall I'm very happy with my new beater guitar. I'd long wanted a telecaster, now I have a totally unique one!
Is it wrong that I'm now eyeing up the Harley Benton PB20 precision bass clone on Thomann now?
It still gets plenty of play & I'm very happy with it. It's now sporting an Oil City FortyNiner pickup. (There's NOTHING wrong with the Wilkinson one, but the Oil City has more beef to it).
If you're prepared to fix a few minor niggles the Te52 is great. I've played a V52 & they're suspiciously similar, the Vintage is probably better finished- if you intend to mod it I think that's less important.
Regarding the headstock logo- I sanded the HB logo off & truoiled the face ( just a couple of coats) I intended to put a waterslide decal on there & apply a few more top coats of oil.
I've not gotten around to it yet! MrsLostSon has recently bought a tool for branding wood (it's like a modified soldering iron) I might do something with that instead.
