Invoicing Software

Does anyone use any good software for invoicing / record keeping? I'm rubbish at making sure my invoices are all ordered so was going to just get something to do it for me rather than trusting myself.

Mainly just want something that'll automatically do all the invoice numbers, and ideally let me stored 'regular clients' so I don't have to fill in all the details every time.

Sage do various levels of software. Including cloud based solutions.

My wife uses Sage at her work. It seems to do everything they need.

I created an invoicing system for work using Excel, was a bit fiddly as I had to include a system that would mean any potential purchase would need authorisation first but it does the job

or grab a copy of Visual basic and create your own database app ;o)

I wouldn't necessarily say better but Xero is certainly easier to get to grips with than either Sage (assuming we're including desktop software and not just their cloud solutions) or Quickbook if you don't want to spend too much time learning decent bookkeeping skills.

That's what I meant - more intuitive. I use Quickbooks in my business as it handles some accounting peculiarities around revenue recognition. I wouldn't call it easy to use if you don't have a finance background.

FreeAgent seems to be what a lot of contractors and online accountants use

I use Quicken (running in an XP virtual machine) copes fine with my simple business accounts and does the tax return entries at year end. Looked at Xero. Expensive. Tenner a month and only handles 20 bank transactions a month.  That means for me I'd have to pay £22 A MONTH. 

And I could find no indication whether it would cope with cash accounting.

I use Xero. I get it via my accountant and it's £10 a month.

Xero is the bane of my life. We produce export journals for various accounts packages (Exchequer and sage for example) - and because Xero handles VAT calculations FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL ENTRY (rather than posting the total VAT in and out like you do in Sage and ANY OTHER ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE if you're uploading transactions from an excel file) - it's impossible to get the format they desire, because it's so terrible.

Mines just going to be for my self employed stuff, rather than a full business. So its just essentially me invoicing for gigs/sessions. Just want it to be simple to use, be able to just select the 'customer' click in the gig details/amounts and then send. With it autopopulating the right invoice number and backing them up

I'm about to start using Xero - it integrates with the rental management software I've used started using for my company (Current-RMS, which seems very slick so far!) so it seems a natural choice. Heard good things about it.

I use quickbooks - it's pretty simple and straight forward to use. I think you'll need quickbooks online though for invoicing - see their website for what's featured in each version.
