I'm getting really pissed off trying to ship an amp.

Every site i go to asks how heavy it is then recommends a service then i spend 10 minutes filling in the details and it says "sorry that's too heavy for this service" recommends a different service which either costs about £800 or i fill the details in and it does it again.

The amp is 17kg boxed and 75 x 55 x 50

Who can i ship it with?

TNT lived up to their name and turned a handmade 5E3 combo into firewood for me....

I just sent a Lazy J20 to Ireland in a flightcase, 35kg with UPS, no hassle at all. Booked through Parcel2Go

They seem to only offer me drop off then say it's too heavy to drop off

If it's mainland uk Adrian at Prodel.com is a top bloke and would get your gear delivered safe and sound. Used him many times without issue.

I send out about 300 consignments a week with TNT, they don't cause me too much aggro and I'm sending much bigger and heavier items than amps.

All the couriers are shit, every single one of them you hear horror stories about, but I've found TNT to be the most consistent.

Looks like they've gone out of business, that domain is for sale.

Edit - looks like it should be prodel.co.uk

    Parcelbroker.co.uk

I ship, or used to, my heavier amps with them. Still UPS, but for some reason Interparcel don't do the heavier ones.

I have shipped a fw amps via APC overnight, have to drop off at the depot though, always had good results with them for both amps and guitars.

As said above, UPS via Parcel2Go and with the quickest service possible is the best and most consistent. It's best to get the quickest because the less time spent in the post, the less time there is for it to get damaged.

Interparcel are cheaper and insurance is worth every penny. I've claimed on amp with a guy on here, much as it took a little effort, they paid up.

Just sent a 15kg speaker back to Guitar Guitar with them.

  • Just shipped an amp via UPS booked via interparcel. £23 plus £9 extra for an additional £500 insurance.
Overnight service, collected from my home and given a collection time.
    The parcel was 34Kg 114 x 40 x 40cm

Never ship on a Friday, the last thing you need is your amp being chucked around the main hub all weekend.

  • Apologies for the hijack but has anybody any tips on packing a valve combo.  I have the original cardboard box but not sure what is the best way to protect it in the box.

    Thank you in advance

Reverb.com has an article on this:

I used bubble wrap and paper instead of the packing chips. Just as long as there is minimal movement of the amp once packed. Your box may not need it but you can reinforce parts of the box with more cardboard.

I like to build in shock absorbency. Movement isn't a terrible problem, it's the inertia of a heavy amp suddenly 'stopping' that causes the damage. Cushion the amp so that slides and drops are soaked up before the shock gets to the amp.  Foam corners help, but I always have extra board to reinforce the box sides, top and base and lots of bubble wrap and air pockets to soak up the movement.
