I have a Japanese Jazzmaster and want to replace the existing pickups - which I find a bit shrill - with a warmer set but without going humbucker.

Any recommendations?

UPDATE - Pulled the trigger on a set of Mojo 58-64s, ordered on the 10th and an email this morning says they're already on their way....excited or what?

I liked Seymour Duncan Antiquity 2's in my Jazzmasters. CIJ/MIJ Jazzmaster pickups are essentially Strat pups in disguise.

I also thought the AVRI pups were pretty good to so maybe that should be your first stop as 2nd hand they are quite cheap.

Upgrade your pots to some better quality will also help and get the most out of the pickups.

I had a MIJ Jazzmaster for over 10 years, the necks on them are ace.

Mojo, without hesitation. The best that can be bought. MIJ ones are, pardon the pun, "bobbins".

I recently put a set of Mojo pickups in my '86 MIJ Jazzmaster and they transformed the sound. They made a nice guitar into an exceptional one. There's now a harmonic richness and depth to the tone that just wasn't evident with the Japanese pickups.

Marc at Mojo recommended a slightly overwound bridge pickup for a warmer tone. I may well swap the volume pot from the standard 1M Ohm to a 500K to tame the highs a tad more.

+1 for Mojo. Tell him if you want them a bit darker than usual and he'll do that too. Though honestly I'd go standard Mojos and high quality 1M pots, then roll the tone off just a smidge if you want to tame the brightness. That sound is awesome - one of the best things a JM can do.

Hey lasermonkey thanks for your comment.

I wrote to Marc only this morning and he has recommended the 58-64 set with an overwound bridge. At £90 for the set they are good value in these days of expensive boutique gear.

    Think I'll take the plunge...

When I had a JM I swapped quite a few sets including Seymour Duncan regular and Antiquity 2's but I was never happy until I put a set of Creamery Extra Width pickups in - they were ace!

I don't play my Mojo equipped JM enough, because I'm too busy playing my Mojo WRH equipped Toronado.
