Folk music, by definition and regardless of where it's from, is usually a reflection on a history, tragedy, injustice, celebration, good crop, fair maiden or whatever and passed on, recorded, re-recorded with different wording and often based on traditional songs/tunes etc. Not sure what you mean but I can't see why Irish 'rebel songs' would be. any different?

  • I'm actually quite into a lot of these old tunes, obviously stuff like Rising of the moon is based on very old events but I'm quite into some of the IRA songs too, Black Watch, little armalite etc etc from historical point, obviously they have extremely negative/aggressive sentiments so I can understand that it's a bit non Pc to listen to them.

As much as I utterly despise the IRA, and some of the sentiments held in these songs, they're only words. I suppose the issue comes when morons follow them and think that they're still fighting some sort of rebellion, when actually they're just getting pissed up in pubs near football grounds.

This is NOT a rebel song…

… but it is probably the greatest political statement ever made from a stage by a rock singer.

Scroll to 3'45" if you don't like U2 but you still want to know why.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

It's good to hear the unedited version.  When they show it on the TV they always edit out the "F**k the revolution".  Doesn't have the same impact.

Whatever overblown thing they became later some of the early U2 was very good.
