My previous housemate had two. Cute little things, but I had a love/hate relationship with them. I resented them for stinking the living room out all the time; the amonia stench was eye-watering, and when they squeaked like mad whilst I was trying to listen to a record in peace. They also got shit and hay everywhere all the time, which was partly down to the owner - she was a lazy arse. Having said that, I felt sorry for them cooped up in a cage each with hardly any room to roam. Personally I wouldn't get one as from what I've seen, they're too much hassle.

Thread summary:- don't get one on it's own, get it a suitable mate like a fox.

I skimmed the thread, but I think thats the crux of it.

Don't flush them down the loo if you think they might be dead, they are bloody good swimmers. It took 3 flushes.

Nope.  Their hutch/ cage should have a private area for them and most of the time they'll live there.  You can clean that with a dustpan and brush -- just change the bedding (I use wood shavings) every other day.  Takes about two minutes tops to get the old wood shavings out and put the new bedding in.  They don't stink -- that only happens if you leave it too long.  And the other bit of the hutch/ cage can be cleaned about every four days.
I hoover too but that's cos they're indoors and hay gets everywhere.  But you don't need special hoover or anything.

  • I had a dream of breeding a herd of a thousand and stampeding them down Swindon High Street.  It would be both terrifying and adorable.

  • Do they piss and shit everywhere they walk?  I am aware that mice are terminally incontinent, which is what causes me to worry about that.

DGF's fave cavy pissed on her the other day, which makes me think that the little fellow thinks that he's better than her, or that she hasn't trained it correctly? I may be way off course here as I'm used to dogs.

They tend to poo in corners but the poo doesn't smell.  I stick kitchen roll down in their favourite spots when I let them out for floor time.  Their pee, if old, goes to an ammonia smell but keep 'em clean every other day and it's not a problem.  I've very rarely been peed on by them as it happens.

We stopped at a holiday cottage in France which had a herd of 200+

I wa worried about stepping on them but thankfully they had enough sense to stay out the way when we were pissed.

  • I've just seen a guinea pig farm.  How easy would it be to have one of those?

I appreciate that this is a big leap from where i started at having one, but this could be a cheeky money spinner.
