How does it manage to get an answer to even the most obscure of tracks using just a fraction of a second of sample, so quickly ?

How does that work from a database perspective ?

I remember using Shazam on a campsite in France about 5 years ago. There was a song that they played everyday on a PA during some activity or other and my kids loved it..had no idea what it was. I must have been 100 meters away when i could hear the track, pointed my phone in the general direction and 10 seconds later I has the answer. Very impressive
...must be witchcraft. That said, do they make any Money? I can recall Shazam being mentioned in 2003 pre smart phones....must have a huge pile of debt?

I used it to identify the music coming from a chav's car which was next to me at a set of lights.
