    It may be because I've played in a couple of 50s/early-60s style rock'n'roll bands, or possibly just because I'm quite a pedant :), but it always pisses me off when "rock'n'roll" is used to describe *rock* music.

    The difference is simple - *rock'n'roll* has a backbeat (you can't lose it, as the great man said), whereas *rock* doesn't. Rock doesn't roll...
