Selling  a guitar on ebay (yes, I know) currently top bidder is a person that has been an ebayer since last year however has zero feedbak or transactions. The username looks kind of randomly generated.

So I sent this message

Hi I notice you are winning at the moment on the Casino, Im just a little concerned that you have no feedback, don't take it the wrong way but I have had issues with people in the past that have had no feedback, are you local to Stockport? in which case cash on collection would be fine (if you win the auction of course)

Cheers

Jon

And recieved this reply

hi no i am not local to stockport if i win i will pay you by pay pal soon as you want i have no feedback because i dont do a lot ebay etc but the casino is the one i like

Alarm bells are ringing a bit fucking loudly for me, should I cancel the bid???

Cancel bid. Put note in text saying you want bidders with more than 5 feedbacks.

Done that and added a note, no zero feedback bids. Just needed somebody to point out the glaringly obvious, cheers!

    Definitely cancel.
Yesterday I received a message from a guy in Poland, Zero feedback score, enquiring about the most expensive item in the shop. Blocked instantly.

My policy is 100% and a score of 20 minimum, otherwise you can fuck right off
eBay is generally based on honesty. I'm not taking the risk if this is your first ever purchase.

I hear the concerns and understand them,  but how does a chap get feedback if no-one lets said chap buy?

His response was enough to put me off. If he cant be arsed to use ANY diction whatsoever I cant trust him to come up with the money, either he is a) - 14 years old or b) - A Nigerian prince or c) - just a bit slapdash OR d) - Jonathan Collingridge, Award winning Architectural Photographer.

Someone PMd me about something I was selling on here and asked a question about the item which showed they knew nothing about it - yet at the same time, wanting me to courier it abroad.

They may be entirely honest but it made warning bells ring....

    Step 1: Cancel bid

Step 2: Remove guitar from eBay

Step 3: Put it up for sale here, on Facebook, on Gumtree etc

Selling on eBay is a mug's game. Far too easy to get scammed.

In the seller preferences there are options for things like this. Minimum feedback and countries that you don't ship to, you can also add people to a blacklist to stop repeat offenders
    Nobody is guaranteed tomorrow.....

The way eBay used to work was that it was more of a two way process. Buyers and sellers on equal footing. If you wanted to build up your feedback, you'd sell a few items yourself.

In this buyer's case, if he wants to be taken seriously on a high value purchase, he'd need to buy some low value items first (strings, whatever) to get a feedback profile.

That would be a fair point if all sellers on ebay applied that policy.

But ebay sellers are not all equal. There are plenty of box-shifters and shops you can buy from to build up some feedback.

It seems quite reasonable for individual sellers to want to see a bit more feedback.

A scammer could set up a new profile and buy a few low value items first before going for a bigger purchase. Not sure low feedback proves a great deal tbh.

There was a time when you could alter your settings to block people with less than 10 feedbacks, or insert your own figure. Now it only allows you to block people with minus numbers in their feedback.

Just another example of one of the stupid little changes they keep bringing in to the system that nobody wants. It's horrible on there for sellers.

You are expected to just take it on the chin and relist. I had one myself a few days ago. zero feedback, no contact. foreign looking userid.

Dont forget to add him to your blocked list after you cancel the bid.
