Frankly with guitar tone and feel being so subjective I'd take a cheap guitar with my own choice of hardware upgrades over any guitar of double the price.

Although as is always the way, I've had a few people now saying they'd pay the asking price despite previously offering me 1/3 of the asking price. Not that I particularly trust them but it is certainly tempting as I feel I'd probably be destined to fail with this as usual

Why don't you get it set up professionally. See how it feels and plays.if it still doesn't feel right ,move it on.. saves the hassle of painting it and wasting time and money....
