IIRC he suffered really badly from arthritis, I can't find a source right now but I think that was a factor in him focusing more on guitar which he could set up with a very light action and 8s.

The guy was an unbelievable musician.  It's like his brain worked twice the speed.

He also had COPD, a sad loss, scarily great player, unlistenable at times but still a source of inspiration
