iPad mini sleep screen

Usually if I'm listening to music through YouTube I turn the screen off to save battery. However recently when the screen is in sleep mode the music stops and you get the home screen with the play/pause options. I press play and it returns to the menu screen for some reason. Anyone know why this is and how to fix it? When I play music via iTunes it's fine in sleep mode.

Can that be turned off? I thought it couldn't be - I asked a few years ago about the same issue.
