The old ones I've owned or played always sounded decent but felt... rustic.

I'd assumed the new ones would have higher build quality, especially since the parent company makes acoustics, but the reviews don't seem that great.

I quite like 'rustic' guitars, though..
Me too - for example I'd rather have one of the most basic entry-level, shoddily finished Gibson models than a glossy but plasticky new Epiphone, although the quailty control and attention to detail on the latter would be significantly better.

But with Gordon Smith, even the more expensive models always seemed a bit rough and ready, like they couldn't get close  to perfection even when they were trying.

And despite their reputation as British-built bargains, they always seemed relatively expensive to me, given there were no import costs or big-distributor markups to consider.
