Where did all the Firebird Xs go?

So, I know they were a laughing stock, and nobody bought them, but they must have gone somewhere. You rarely see them on eBay, so where are they?

Do Gibson still have a warehouse full?
Do they use them to fuel their kiln?
Did collectors buy them hoping they'll appreciate?
Are they lurking under beds and in wardrobes, their owners too embarrassed to admit they bought one?
Does anyone on this forum own one?

Don't get me wrong, I don't want one. I'm just wondering where they all went.

Didn't Gibson destroy most of them and use the electronics to make the almost equally successful Les Paul X 2013?

They should never been allowed to escape into public view.

I bought them all. It's basically the new  Les Paul and I'll give a few to some to a new generation of as-yet unknown guitar legends and when the world sees the error of its ways I'll sell them all for a huge profit!

    Mwahahahaa!

seriously though, I hope they, and the people responsible for them have been buried in lime.

Do we know how many they actually let out the factory?

I suspect it will be a very low number

Does the United States have a school for visually impaired guitarists?

There were hardly any Explorers in the 50s, were there?

May be we should all buy one and stick it under the bed for our next of kin....

I remember reading about them but not a scooby do what half those buttons do.

Tbf, most people dont even use a tone knob so god knows what they hope to achieve with that lot!

Just been looking around for a video of one being played live in a band. Not many, but then I found this:

The difference being that the Explorer used no technology with a high built-in obsolescence factor - the only unusual thing about it was the shape.

Good luck finding a computer that will run the FBX editor software in twenty years, even assuming something more vital in the electronics hasn't died and is now irrepairable.

Although I suppose you could rip it all out and use the body and neck to carry a load of new stuff of your own choosing, it does at least look like the pickups and hardware are fairly conventional (robot tuners aside, and we already know they're easy to replace). But that pretty much defeats the point...

I found this weird one. Guitarist in very traditional sounding blues band talks about how he loves his Firebird X while using none of the "features". I guess they did him a deal. Willing to bet it didn't have many outings after they made that video.
