Greg Koch and JD Simo are modern day guitar heroes and should be as revered as Clapton, Page, Beck etc IMHO of course....

This is just sublime:

True up to a point - though arguably not at all in Beck's case.

I've heard  Sunshine of Your Love while driving the other day and was struck by what an awful song it is - and how little I like Jack Bruce's voice.

I think there's a tendency to romanticise some music - which in truth hasn't stood the test of time particularly well.

You're not going to debate Page though are you? Who might have one of the largest repertoires of quality and timeless songs to his name.

I've always found Zepplin far too self indulgent and never rated Page much either....but thats just me.

A number of "his" best ones are plagiarised from other artists.

Agreed. But I would, I've never liked Cream.

    Completely agree.

Amazingly it was only last year I heard the 'Beano' album for the first time, was completely unblown away.

If a band played that now, it would be pub rock at best. It is notable not for the playing but for it's moment in time. Which, if truth be told, contains a little bit of unpleasantness about it - since these were basically white guys getting played when black guys couldn't

Only on this forum could we descend into a debate where we put down so many of the all time greats.

No, I'm not going to debate Page.

I've always thought Zep made dreadful racket - not my thing at all....

If the song doesn't grab me it doesn't matter how good the guitar playing is.
I find flashy virtuosity a bit dull and self-indulgent.

^This. Cream always sounded to me like brilliant musicians in search of a half-decent tune. Clapton himself has penned some great songs but generally post Cream. Agree re Sunshine. Great riff which any writer would have felt rightfully smug about, but a dire song.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

I can't see the clip and my search for it has  thrown up another clip featuring these two.

JD Simo seems determined to thrill half of the people watching him and to annoy the other half. I am in the first category.
I am not making a direct comparison between his playing and the young Eric Clapton (and I am sure miserneil was not doing that) but the fire and passion on show here is comparable.
If he is inspired by playing a 50s Les Paul (that is thankfully not confined to a display case)......I get that completely.

In fact I am shutting down the Laptop to play for 20 minutes at this late hour.
Because - it is impossible to resist.

Ah, come on - why should they be immune from criticism? My comment about Page's plagiarism is provable fact, and it has always annoyed me that he seldom gets pulled up on it. Why should he get a free ride?

Yeah, some people on here are frankly clueless. Or can't express themselves very well.

What you've got to remember is that could play "Stairway To Heaven" when I was 12. Jimmy Page didn't actually write it until he was 22.

    This is it.

More modern players like Greg Koch etc are more likely to make me want to pick up a guitar and play than Clapton is.

I'd be careful saying that around here... ;)

I dont think his age has anything to do with it, he's a player that has come to the fore in recent years thanks, in part, to YouTube etc so I'd class him as a modern player.

I just looked up how old JD Simo is to further prove my point....and he's 32....that's just f*cking depressing...!! :)
