Probably because he's just been banned for having you round.
    eBay sees all.

Turns out he relisted it for £900 and it sold, with the usual ebay and paypal fees. I'd offered him £850 cash, so he did get a better offer.

You see he should have just raised the price of the guitar to £10k, Sold it to you anyway and waited for the listed to die a natural death.....
You can't alter a listing once a bid has been placed.

Also what some people seem to forget about in their unseemly haste to cut out the ebay fees is the people who have bid in good faith for the item.

Screw them as well I suppose?
I meant on a fixed price buy it now auction
There is no such thing as a Buy it now Auction.  ;)

It's either BIN or an auction.

If it's a BIN you can stop the sale at any time, no problem.

If it is an auction and you have bids you are honour bound to let it run.

    Choose which suits you best.
There can be auctions which also have a Buy It Now price.

So a seller wanted to sell via eBay. What does that have to do with eBay? Why is, when people act shitty via eBay, people immediately whinge about eBay? There are plenty of things to criticise eBay for, but this isn't one.

Is it time for an eBay sub-forum yet?

I think it's perfectly acceptable to advertise an item in multiple places (ebay, gumtree, FB, here, etc.) and sell to which you choose.

I did recently buy something via ebay and went & collected it for cash. The seller then went and withdrew the item from ebay.

Right but paragraph 1 and 2 here are different scenarios.

In paragraph 2 - The item was found via eBay and bought through that channel, albeit with cash. It wasn't sold via FB etc, so where's the actual justification for cutting out eBay's fees?

I must have not remembered correctly. Either way offering £850 for a £900 listing wasn't a better offer this week.

My Mrs has tried to sell some stuff on there in the past. Terrible.

Depends what you are selling.  Phones and household stuff = generally dealing with muppets.  Guitars = usually dealing with like-minded decent folk ;)

I tried. I failed. That's life. Fair play to the guy, but I've had an eye opener about Ebay. Thank God for forums like this!

I agree with you and I wasn't intending to imply otherwise.

    Guitarists?

As a group probably some of the flakiest people around, and they insist on calling you dude.  :s

Many stories on here of people who have turned up at folks houses to buy a guitar, spent hours "testing" it at full tilt then say it's not quite what they were looking for.

I'd rather have someone who just doesn't turn up.
