I don't know if it would work for what you are doing, but to convert vids into a format I can use I have MTS M2TS Converter. It's free and it does the job.

I have a mac, not sure if there is a PC version?

Looks like Handbrake can do it.
Handbrake is free and a good proggie.
I was using it to convert .mov to .mp4 and then a free joiner to join the mp4s together.
    Worked fine.
Got Movavi, thinking it would be better or easier, a one-stop solution.  (I take a lot of .mov files for work.)
    Definitely can't recommend Movavi.
I'm back to Handbrake and the joiner.
Handbrake = a bit slow but reliable.
