What's Hot

Back  when I started college in late 1975. THIS was the album we were all listening to.
And it still sounds great all those many years later.
Budgie - Bandolier
Just a faultless masterpiece.

What got you through college?

  • My college years were around the time of AFD and Nevermind...  but I was listening to Led Zeppelin II, shred and NWOBHM. Wearing the Bay Area Thrash uniform (black skin tight jeans, white high tops and a Master of Puppets T).

This, I think, explains my lack of female companionship during those years.

  • Sad to say I was at uni from 98-02. Nu-Metal. Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Papa Roach...
The stand out album for me was ATDI- Relationship of Command. Still one of my favourite albums ever.

Single song: How You Remind Me by Nickleback. I dread to think how many times I heard it whilst working in a lab with only Radio 1 for entertainment.  :s

I guess this was popular as it was on rotation in the student union - it sounded so different back in early 1976.

If you went to college in Manchester it could be any time in the last 30years.

Early 70s so Dark side of the Moon, Tubular Bells, Argus, Split, Birds of Fire. Loads of stuff really.

I was a big Budgie fan too, great live band. Tony Bourge's son was trying to sell one of his dad's amps on here not so long ago, apparently he's still playing and writing music.

My main college years (1991-93) album, which my best friend and I listened to on repeat literally for months, was -

    Ministry - Psalm 69

When I was doing my degree everyone seemed to be into The Smiths, The Cure, U2 and there was a point when everyone got issued with a copy of Paul Simon's Graceland.

However, always the contrarian I was listening to Frank Zappa, Japan ( thanks to my mate Chris and his terrible 80s moustache), Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Courtney Pine,The Leather Nun and Fairport Convention. Also Burning Spear, Robert Johnson, the Bhundu Boys and pretty much a live band or two of some sort most  weeks for four years ( I wasn't slow, I did a degree plus a post graduate thingy - I know, hard to believe).

However, to name a single album I might give it to The Noise of Trouble: Live in Tokyo by Last Exit. Just freaking wild, slightly pretentious as well as guaranteed to annoy my housemates.

A toss up between Dog Man Star by Suede and The Holy Bible by Manic Street Preachers. I may have been a little bit of a moody bugger who thought he was more clever than he was. I was also two years away from disappointment with both bands. They're still brilliant albums though.

Oops. In my defense, I'd spent the evening periodically cleaning baby sick off my sofa, floor, cushions and self (it's 0130 now- Guess why I'm up s ). 1994 certainly SEEMS longer ago than it was!

The Woodentops Giant was the album that cheered me up after I spent two years trying and failing to get a degree.  I still think it's brilliant.  Every song.

I started at college in 1990. The album EVERYBODY was listening to at college 1990-1992 was REM's Automatic For The People. Personally I was listening mainly to The Antidote by Ronny Jordan and Beyond Nature by Phil Keaggy.

  • For me, 1987-1990, it would have been stuff like:

    Leonard Coden - Greatest Hits
    Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
    Pixies - Doolittle
    Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes

Also Hothouse Flowers, The Primitives, The Soup Dragons, The Stone Roses, REM. Ancient and Modern all mixed up.
Some folks like water, some folks like wine.

I didn't go to college..... left school at sixteen and got a job at Studiospares when they were still in Camden Town.
My commute from Uxbridge to Camden every day was accompanied mostly by Vio-Lence's Eternal Nightmare album.

  • 1973 to 1976 for me at Liverpool Uni. Two albums come immediately to mind.
    Barnstorm - Joe Walsh
    Tres Hombre - ZZ Top

It's hard to choose between them.

    It's not a competition.

  • I didn't go to college but, whilst I was doing my A levels in 1985, I discovered The Rain Parade. I played this and their other LPs to death. They were the first band I went to see live and they really made me want to play the guitar in a band.
