What pedals with Marshall Class 5 Combo??

What's Hot

Morning all,

After unsuccessful hunting for JCM 808 (still keep my eyes open) I opted for Marshall Class 5 Combo...for bedroom / garage use.

What can I say - great little beast!!!

Anyway, I generally play AC/DC stuff, so normally straight to Aamp cranked up and let the valves do the job.

However, this amp mainly shines when wide open which is not always possible.

Last night we played @ 11pm in our garage so the volume was at 9 o'clock tops.

So no overdrive... Therefore am thinking of getting some pedals to boost/overdrive/distort it at lower volume.

What pedals would you recommend??

I will be getting anyway Fulltone OCD, xotic booster or tube screamer, but looking for:

a) OD pedal which could give me that ACDCish sound at low volume (not sure if OCD will do it??)

b) distortion to get Black Sabbath ish sound at lower volumes

C) maybe some reverb / delay pedal(s)

Is there anything suitable there??
Is it achievable at all??

Thanks for your suggestions.

Chris

Worth getting a Marshall Guv'nor II anyway, as you can get used ones for £25-30. Classic Marshall sound, and the Deep control will go some way towards making your combo sound like a closed-back 4x12. Boss OD-3 and OCD also good, but I think my OCD (clone) gives a more amp-like sound than the OD-3.

Treble/full range booster can work nicely with these kinda amps.

Maybe Catalinbread Naga Viper - treble boost but you can dial the frequency down to mids if you like, or make it more or less focused on the boosted frequency.

  • TC Spark Booster. It has gain and volume plus bass and treble controls. There's also a mini-toggle that will give you "fat", "mid" or  "clean" boost. It's very flexible for boosting pretty much anything.

Catalinabread Dirty Little Secret will give you classic Angus sounds at lowish volume.  For Iommi I'd agree with the treble booster idea, his sound isn't particularly based on high gain, its more to do with perceived boost.
