Nasty. One of my childhood friends has the same ailment and it is utterly gut wrenching seeing him in his wheelchair, with all of the medical equipment needed just to keep him alive. That illness is about the most terrifying I could imagine.

Indeed, he would always pull the 'Boks out of the fire, singlehandedly.  A superb player in his day, I'd say the world No 1 Scrum Half of his generation.

I'd second what Jal said. The guy was an immense player. Skilled and fast but also hard as nails. Almost an extra flanker and in many ways his size and strength redefined the position.
