After a 7 day ban the next thing they do is give you a permanent suspension - if you want to keep your ebay account/years of good feedback do tread carefully and dont put anything else in messages because they will suspend you
I got perma-banned, but they revoked it when I appealed it with customer service - I did have to go through the 90 day "we hold your funds till we know the buyer gets it and it's all good" program again.

I'm not risking it anymore, I can't lose my eBay account.

There's constantly offers for final fees of £1 these days, so I just list when they come along, so even going through the proper channels, I still only pay a quid in fees to eBay and 3.4% to PayPal.

  • I've just received a 7 day ban too, oddly enough though I can still contact the interested party via eBay messages if it isn't through the ad.
What did you get banned for @jonnyburgo?

So. let me get this right - if you sell a car or guitar on eBay the potential buyer is not allowed to contact the seller to view it?

with regard to putting your number in photos, i noticed over the weekend (not sure how long it has been the case) that ebay have added a 'snitch button' in the photo gallery labelled 'do these photos break ebay rules' or something, which opens the door to busybodies and general creeps.

eg someone makes a rubbish 'best offer' you refuse politely, they notice that you have made your phone number visbile in listing and snitch.
or someone else selling the same item wants to knock your item off the site for a while so they can be the only person offering that item and get a better price, they see your number in listing and snitch.

you may get away with it but that button could potentially cause problems if you get the wrong person looking at your listing.

With cars you can use a "classifieds" listing where you pay a flat rate with no FVF and contact is allowed.

  • Time to play by the rules and use gumtree and here, unless a fee promotion turns up.

I wonder if ebay are doing the calculations.

When we put a promotion on we get x thousand sales. And make zero.

When we don't have a promotion we sell x minus 70%.

My view is they should move back to a max fee.

I had a buyer message me with his phone number at the weekend.    I didn’t reply to the message though and only txted him.     I suspect they filter through sent messages so replying to someone who contacted you triggers it so I’d avoid replying on their system to any message trying to make contact.

I can see their point but the counter measures seem way ott and badly implemented.

on a tangent, i badly wish ebay would let this 'pre-owned' crap slide. it's fluff-talk.
if you own it and you have taken it out of the box and used it, it is 'used'.
if you own it but have never taken it out of the box and used it (unwanted gift, etc), then it is 'new' or (technically) 'new other'.
but both have been 'pre-owned'.so it qualifies nothing. woolly language, lose it.

what's the problem with 'used'? unless you are using it to describe a former partner it's hardly offensive.

I'd say pre-owned to describe a former partner is pretty offensive too ;)

Giving this some thought, I believe there is a solution.

  • Can you not just list your item on eBay and gumtree and the heavily allude in your eBay listing that it's also advertised elsewhere, hint hint nudge nudge. Then potential buyers can find your number from there?

I mean, gumtree is owned by eBay, so they should be cool with that.

I might call him and ask him whether dogs see in colour or black & white. Well he did say "any questions".
