If your car petrol gauge shows a diagram of a petrol pump, look to see if there's an arrow or even the petrol pump spout on the left or right of it. That denotes which side your petrol cap is on.
Not always the case. I thought the same but I’ve recently driven a couple of vehicles where it was on the opposite side.
    Really? What cars?

That's literally the point of the arrow, so I wonder which manufacturers have it wrong!
I drive a few different vehicles at work, I’m pretty sure one of them with the petrol pump spout on the opposite side to the filler cap was a Citroen relay crew cab tipper.

I've seen it a few times too on hire cars etc.  I don't recall which ones though.

5 minutes of googling finds examples of the arrow story as true and examples saying it’s a myth. Even people quoted from within the industry saying it is true and examples of cars ( all Kia’s for example) where it isn’t. There doesn’t seem to be an alternative explanation and not all cars have the arrow anyway.

it could be that the cars in question are of foreign manufacture, places where the pumps are on the opposite side from here.

Checked and it works in my car, although I guess it's a 50:50 chance anyway.
I'm guessing it's a thing that's meant to work but isn't always corrected when they move between left and right hand drive versions.

My mate said the same but then saw where the spout was pointing and so that's why I added that.

Which is why they are generally easy to crack, without resorting to trying every combination.

We have a bunch of them at work, I amaze people regularly by putting the numbers in using different combinations.
