Marshall ED1 compressor

I realise some people would rather eat their own spleen that use a compressor, however I want a cheap one to use for clean tones and fingerstyle and work with a light overdrive for more sustain.  I see there seems to be a few cheap Marshall ED1s on Ebay, are these okay, any other recommendations, I'm only looking at £40-£50 used.

  • The Marshall compressor is excellent, you need to spend considerably more to get something better in my opinion.

It's a great compressor BUT for me the knobs were the problem.
1mm either way and it is radical.
So... my call on it was that it wasn't that much use live (great for home; not for live where you've got to adjust in dim light).
And with that hard sell I'll happily flog you mine for £25.
    Or
Get a Wamper Ego for live.

I'll take it.  Can you PM me your bank details please.  I only want it for home use.

  • The Edward is a great compressor. It's the best under £100 I would say
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

Thanks for all the opinions have bought Grunfeld's.  Next question before or after the overdrive?

    Before.
After is a distinctive sound, but it's not a particularly useful sound.

Much prefer my compressor after overdrive. Placing it before drive takes away a lot of the nuances of subtle volume changes and how they affect the gain of the drive pedal. I usually only use a comp for clean sounds though. There's no right or wrong though, whatever sounds best to you is the answer.

ED1 turned up today, had a quick play and much prefer before the overdrive.  Really pleased with it does exactly what I wanted it to.
