Music Documentary Recommendation

What's Hot
darcymdarcym Frets: 1297

I'm looking for some interesting music documentaries, there are a couple of good metallica ones, Sound City, what else, open to any but a special interest in those documenting studio time / album creation

    We Are Twisted F**king Sister.

    Absolutely brilliant.

Special mention to Anvil. The Story of Anvil too.
    Laugh, love, live, learn.

I really enjoyed the Rush documentary on Netflix, but then I was a big Rush fan back in the day. The Twisted sister one was interesting, but I never liked the band (although I like Dee Snyder - interesting guy)

  • I’d +1 on the Twisted Sister one.

In a parallel but  different way the Amy Winehouse film Amy also tells you stuff you didn’t know. When you’ve stopped sobbing at that you can start over again at Whitney: Can I be me. Lots of stuff there I didn’t know about.

If you can find it Deep Blues , 1992 documentary is very low budget but very superb ( well, apart from Dave Stewart wandering aimlessly through it ).

The Godmother of rock’n’roll: Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

  • Krautrock: The Rebirth of Germany

    I found it utterly inspirational.

I've been searching in vain for the one about the Kursall Flyers "So you want to be a rock & roll star" there's odd excerpts on you tube but I don't think the complete version is available.

i think you can get "The MC5 - a true testimonial" and if you ever wanted to know why people of my age rave about them have a look at the clips on YouTube. Wayne Kramer might just be the best rock guitarist who ever drew breath.

The Howard Goodall programme on Sergeant Pepper. A window on pure genius, made all the more remarkable when you know how it was done.

Sign up on Coursera for the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. I'm really enjoying it. Like a documentary  . . . On a parr with Goodall but you have to remember things - not difficult.

There's a thread about this somewhere...
Here are the ones I liked *= on Netflix
The Wrecking Crew (abouts studio band)*
20 Feet from Stardom (about backing singers)*
It might get loud (The Edge, Jack White & Jimmy Page talking guitars)
    Hired guns (about hired musicians)*
Metal: a headbangers journey (plus the metal evolution series- about how metal became diverse)
Hip hop evolution (how hip hop came to be)*
Rush: beyond the lighted stage (all about Rush)*
Foo Fighters- back & forth (all about Foo fighters)*
As palaces burn (lamb of God faced legal action after a fan died)
    Filmage (about the descendants)
Runnin down a dream (Tom Petty documentary)*
    Flight 666 (iron maiden doc)

  • Is Pearl Jam - "Twenty" any good? It's one that's been on my to-do list for ages but never got around to it.

Loved Searching for Sugarman. Hired Gun was good but really depressing I thought. Just started Sonic Highways which I'm enjoying so far despite not being a massive foos fan but it seems to be less about them than I'd imagined :)

  • 'Big Star: Nothing can hurt me' is on Netflix.
One of my very favourites is 'Love Shines' about Ron Sexsmith recording an album with Bob Rock
The BBC did a three part documentary called 'The Story of the Guitar' part of the Imagine series presented by Alan Yentob.

Not sure where you can see it now but I would love to have a copy.

  • Just in case they are so obvious that no one has mentioned them all the Classic Albums episodes, or at least the ones where you have a passing interest in the artist. I’m not sure that they are all in one place but most of them are on Sky/Now.

Dig - the story of the relationship between The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Well worth a watch.

    Anton Newcombe is extraordinary.

Cool, will have to track it down.

    Other recommendations...

    • Springsteen and I - more about his fans than The Boss himself, but great nontheless
    • What Happened Miss Simone? - arguably more about her politics than the music, but still well worth a watch

    This.

And "The Wrecking Crew" (also Netflix, I think) - about Tommy Tedesco, Carol Kaye, Glen Campbell and the rest of the people who really played on those '60s singles we all love.
