Probably my fave xmas song. It's so 'real' and so emotional. Heartfelt lyrics and performance, and tinged with the sadness of Kirsty's death.

If it’s the one that’s been on before, I saw it.. before..
One of my favourite songs, and my favourite Christmas song!
I get quite emotional when I hear it..
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

The story of The Fairytale of New York was screened on RTE television last night. It appears to be substantially different from the program of the same name shown on BBC. The RTE screening featured Christy Moore, Imelda May, Roseanne Cash and, of course, Shane McGowan. I was surprised at how the program affected me, everyone aged very badly. Especially Shane himself. I must watch the video posted in this thread, maybe later today.

Fairytale...... Is to The Pogues what Bohemian Rhapsody is to Queen. The Pogues released a lot of material but they will always be remembered for that one song. Pure genius.

The best Christmas song ever, whether you like it or not. (And I understand some have grown tired of it now, or never liked it in the first place - but it still is ;).)

The thing I think is funny is that there actually is no "NYPD choir" - hence why there's a pipe band in the video instead, because that's what the NYPD do have.

    RIP Kirsty :(.
and that they ended up singing Mickey Mouse theme as they didn't know any Irish songs.

    Yes,I think it's just brilliant
What a shame that dreadful Ed Shearan has just done a cover version ....may he be eternally cast into damnation for it

FFS. I haven’t even heard it and it’s already at the top of my list of shit covers.

Same here.  I wonder how long will I manage to avoid hearing it. (Not long I suppose).

Having looked at the BBC program, the RTE screening is almost entirely different from the one shown on the BBC. Both are interesting, the RTE version shows a  heavy and slurred Shane who is smoking an e-cigarette. If there is a link to the RTE program, I will add it here.

The BBC programme is from 2005 , so I imagine the RTE programme is a more modern version.

Maybe it's "The story behind the Making of The Story of The Fairytale of New York".

I can't believe it's 17 years since Kirsty MacColl died.  I can remember exactly where I was when I found out. She was a great singer. I had a crush on her in the 90s.

I've heard a few songs of Ed Sheeran's and I don't understand why he's become so popular. Maybe I've only heard his weakest poorest stuff.
Is he considered a serious musician or just a pop-star?
