Elton John's Philadelphia Freedom was on in HMV the other day, and the awkwardly placed distorted guitar stood out in one or two of the verses - seemed at odds with the rest of the song.

Any other contenders?

Eddie Van Halen doing an EVH solo on Beat It springs to mind... I recall hearing it and thinking "What is THAT doing there?!"

To be fair, EVH's guitar solo in Jump is equally inappropriate.

Except...that one's so iconic that it'd be weird if it wasn't there. Pretty much the gold standard in one-take solos too, IMO.
