Painting guitars

I've got two guitars to build at the moment.
One is getting a blue Crimson Stains dye then their finishing oil on top.

The other doesn't have such attractive grain & I'm thinking a solid colour would be best. Red being the preference.

Whats the best way to achieve this? I'm not in a position to start messing with Nitro sprays- I live in a small flat with two small children.
I have various furniture paints lying around from other projects, is there any reason why one of those wouldn't work?
My thinking is- two coats of paint, sanded smooth (lightly reliced- one of the paints is that Annie Sloan chalk paint stuff that MrsLostSon used for a table that looks awesome) then I intend to apply an oil or wax to give a smooth finish and seal the body once I'm done. What say you brave builders of the forum?

I had a thought of buying and old copy of Sounds or N.M.E and glueing various sections of
the pages e.g. Punk artist pics on the body, then applying some sort of laquer/varnish over the top
    to seal them in.
