Which MIDI cables?

Looking to buy some MIDI cables for the first time, to link my ES-8, DD500 and JVM amp.

So, I’m going to need a couple of long cables and a couple of short ones and ideally I’d like right-angled plugs on them all.

However, when I’ve been checking the connections on the pedals against images of some the right-angled cables, it looks like the pins won’t be in the correct position; ie on the DD500 and ES-8 the sockets have the pins situated along the bottom of the port, but on the cables there is usually one side that has the pins sitting along the “top”.

Does that make sense? 

I know I can get the connectors that are adjustable to 8 angles, but I don’t think I could make up the cables on my own.

Help?!?

Disaster area do midi cables where you can rotate the heads. I use them to great effect

I use these, I just wish they were available in much longer lengths.

I use these, I just wish they were available in much longer lengths.

You can get 70cm ones if you try VERY hard. I had to get a friend to mail me one from Germany.

MIDI data is differential and goes down pins 4 & 5 (which is why 3 pin DINs don't work!) The screen is not needed* for operation but is obviously a good idea!

So, any 'hi fi' DIN to DIN 'all wired' 5 pin cables will work but beware of the 'crossed DIN' . This was wired for tape to tape dubbing and won't work. Do not pay silly money for 'super' cables, they will make 'all difference. If there is a computer fair happening look for some V old PC keyboard cables, they work.

Maplin still, I think, sell a 5pin coupler but Amazon will be much cheaper.

*I once sent MIDI down 44mtrs of CAT 5e 4pr and the kbd played a prog in a laptop the other end perfectly!

Another wee question, does it matter which order I connect the pedals/amp in the MIDI “loop” from the ES-8?

As long as each device has a MIDI Thru you can daisy chain the devices.
The last device in tbe chain doesn't need the Thru connector.
If they don't you'll need to get a MIDI splitter. I've a dislike of daisy chaining MIDI devices so built an eleven port splitter into my pedal loop switcher.

Cool! Cheers for that. The DD500doesnt have a through, so I need to buy a splitter
