Depends on what you ask for. one or two piece maple neck?
This is not an official response.

  • I've never given it a second thought to be honest.  Just taken it for granted some guitars have them and some don't, it's never been an issue on the instruments I've owned either way.

I always expect charvel to be one piece 1/4 sawn.

I'd assume the standard option would be a one piece neck with no skunk stripe. The same as their, erm, standard range.

I assumed USA & Custom shop to be 1/4 sawn, it certainly is the case for Jackson.

  • Out of interest is there a structural reason why one is preferable?  Or is it more of an aesthetic preference?

I think its the look you assoiate with a guitar.

A PRS without bird fret markers looks odd I cant imagine a Charvel without a skunk stripe or 1/4 sawn neck.

  • Fair enough.  Explains why I've never thought too much about it,  I have 2 PRS both with Moons (and dings).

But how do they put they truss rod in?

its either one piece so needs a skunk stripe to put the rod in from the back, or it has a seperate fretboard and the  truss rod is installed under that.

I dont think they ever did the rarer split down the middle method

fender sometimes combined skunk stripe and seperate fretboard just because they were tooled up for putting them in from the back

And this is why my career in politics never took off.
Answering questions with answers that can be factually checked and disproved, sheesh, what was I thinking?

I always used to judge a Fender Strat by whether it had a skunk on it or not.

In fact, I remember seeing skunk transfers on ebay years ago, you could add a false one if your heart desired.

(why in God's name you would want to though....)
