Ry Cooder’s Strats have these on - and sound really ‘big’. I agree it’s not a good look though....

Telecaster bridge Pickups and original fender lap steel Pickups have a lot in common.

rickenbacker horseshoes are another example similar to the one in the OP.

I have a horseshoe on its original lap steel guitar, you sometimes see the same model guitar for sale with the pickup missing, which is a shame. The horseshoe is loud and trebly. Louder than any normal pickup

This is mine, it is now Esquired, with the Eldred wiring, the pickup really doesn't get in the way at all, I can still damp at the bridge while picking.....

    I'm strangely drawn to it.
    Must be the huge magnet.

@ToneControl @Sassafras The strings feed above the coil & under the top plate and have two magnets on each end of the pickup, here is a shot without the top plate fitted.

@Mojopickups interesting, how big are the bobbins? 42gauge wire? Dc resistance?

    I see
I have wanted to try a through-coil pickup for a long time
I have read that the pick noise is effectively removed because the pick-noise-different- string-movements are not rendered into output current
