I dunno, there’s something about the almost illicit thrill of meeting strangers in car parks...

Don’t book directly through UPS,  book through Interparcel or Transglobal Express. They have their own insurance and cover guitars.

If you want to double check, give Transglobal a call, they are very helpful.

Thanks, Mort. I have just noticed that with Transglobal. They offer Enhanced Transit Liability and - as you say - it is independent of the courier

For guitars I now stick to sell locally on Gumtree, buy on eBay.

It’s just not worth the hassle of posting guitars these days and while it might take longer to sell something locally for cash, or at a reduced price, it’s pretty much as safe as you can get.

It should be fine - you can take a photo of the handover.

I've collected, had people collect, met in car parks, etc. and all been OK.

I've been to someone's house to pickup a guitar and, despite me having the cash in my pocket, they insisted on Paypal (even though it cost them fees!).

Is that how you got your username?

If you see anything of mine in the classifieds is strictly postage only ;)

A few years ago I had to send an expensive watch (well expensive to me at about £500 new) to a London specialist for repair from South Wales.
The jewellers I had bought it from had closed down & no local jewellers could do the repair.
I sent it Royal Mail, next day, insured for £500, tracked & signed for.
I got a phone call from the London jewellers 2 days after posting it to say that the parcel had arrived but that there was nothing in it.
They said that it wasn"t the first time that this had happened as the posties knew that parcels going to their address would likely contain expensive watches or jewellery.
I tried to claim on the insurance but Royal Mail just said that they had delivered it & there was no proof that I had actually put the watch in the parcel.
Bingo no watch & no insurance money to buy a new one with.

I bought jewellery online at Xmas there and the box for the necklace was inside the parcel but there was no necklace in it.

I suspect in this case, though, it's someone who works in the warehouse who stole it and the person sending it didn't bother to check.

Thankfully the company sent me a replacement.

So to summarise, cash on collection, BT in advance of collection or shipping via TransGlobalExpress?

My face-to-face deals have consisted of meeting folk at their places or in public car parks and have always been cash deals. All experiences have been a pleasure, met some great people and it's easy to waste an hour or two talking about gear.

Pretty much, unless you are selling on eBay as they don't allow BT payments.

I wouldn't have a problem with Handover Guitar. I've always found Germans to be very trustworthy...

  • Always cash or bacs for me. Don't mind posting but only use ups through transglobalexpress.

It obviously needs a bit of trust. I sold my master built strat on these forums to a guy in Norway. He paid me first with bacs transfer and then I sent him the guitar

Agree with the above post - drove over 3 hours on Sunday to meet up to complete a trade. Meeting up always adds to the whole (new to me) guitar experience rather than ordering new online. Spent 5 minutes lookng at the guitars and completing the deal - and then a further hour musing about gear/life etc.

Prefer to spend £50 in fuel than send via courier with the uncertainties of insurance etc.

  • So, I'll admit it - I sold a guitar on ebay.
The guy paid PayPal immediately and picked the guitar up the next day - shock horror!!!
He was 60, genuine and had loads of feedback.
I still spent the next few days thinking, oh shit what if I get a credit card chargeback.

But then, each case in its own merit....

Oh and I traded a guitar before Xmas - met in a layby on the A1.
Easy trade but the Police turned up, seriously, and we had a chat about it being guitars and not guns in the cases ha.
