Ultimate lunchbox head collection

What's Hot

So there are now loads of choices when it comes to the mini lunchbox style heads.

I've always had a thought in my mind about building a collection of them.  What would your ideal collection be?

1) Clean
2) Low/Mid gain
3) High Gain

Think I'd go for:

1) Morgan SW22
2) Soldano Hot Rod 25
3) Splawn Nitro SS

As it's for fun, I've gone boutique.

  • Bogner New Yorker - blackface and tweed. Gorgeous tones in a nice package.

  • 3 - Jet City JCA22H
    3 - Victory Kraken
    3 - That 5150 lunchbox head

    Mainly because I don't care about clean/mid-gain.

For 1200 flimflams it'd better make me weep wherever the knobs point.

  • I had an orange OR15 for a while and really liked it. Not sure what category I would put it in as I was using it as a clean pedal base and never really used the drive, but I do remember it sounding great with the gain turned up.

Can only comment on the amps I've actually tried/owned. I'd love to try out some of the Orange high gain small heads to see how they compare.

    1) Morgan PR12H
    2) Bogner Atma (could also be 1 as well but for the lack of reverb - gorgeous and verstaile cleans)
    3) Mesa Boogie MKV/25

I've only played one and own one so Bogner Atma it is.

It does Clean and Low/Mid Gain well….as for heavy….no idea.

80s mode on the Atma certainly gets into saturated high gain territory nicely, but to me no matter how it's set it never really gets aggressive sounding enough for me to consider it a modern metal amp. There's something quite refined about the tone that can't be dialled out, which is very much part of its character.

  • Just picked up a Victory RK50. My first 'lunchbox' amp. Just a shame about the lack of EQ. I've put a 6 band in the loop. Monster amp, though.

Marshall 2525H, my standard response does all the dirty marshall tones I'd want plus an alright clean channel if you're into that sort of thing. Boost it with a TS/SD1 for metal tones. DSL20HR would do all that on a budget as well I reckon.

Have to admit I would like to try a Victory Sherrif 22 and one of the new Orange 15w for comparison though.

  • The Mesa TA-15 has great clean and low/medium gain tones in the Vox and blackface modes. It has two high gain modes too, but I don't really use high gain so I couldn't tell you what they're like.

    Marshall jcm800
    Peavey 6505+
    Mesa dual rec.

    I like big lunches.
