So a short trip through the road hell that is Harrogate and a meeting in a car park with the true gent that is @CountryDave and this piece of guitar heaven was coming home with me.

A 1989 PRS Custom in Scarlet Red, 10 top with brazilian rosewood board.

For a guitar thats nearly 30 years old it’s in amazing condition.
Sounds amazing. Really something special.

  • Yum! That's lovely and I bet it sounds incredible on your hands!

I do like a PRS that's slightly understated. Those garish two colour ones really turn me off

Cheers mate, I love their outlandish colours.
Beach crossfade, dragons breath and the prism schemes being favourites.

For me it suits them, they’re like little boiled sweets!

I may have a weakness for non mainstream guitars though  ;)

Sweet switch built into the tone push/pull pot.

Oh really!? I’ve never seen that before. Is that a mod?

Possibly, it’s previous owner was @CountryDave who may be able to clarify.
I’ve never seen a factory one though.

Either way it still does what it needs to and has the benefit of a tone control.

Once I've fixed my little tuner accident I’ll be able to play it again!

  • Looks absolutely superb Andy - for me Scarlet Red is one of ‘the’ PRS colours.

Mate you’re spot on, I completely agree.

I’ve had a vintage yellow one too, I can’t recall what the the third blue colour was called out of the three original colours.

The top really dances and moves in the light.
Wish I’d have had it for the Huddersfield jam, I would have loved to record it.

As far as PRS goes, for me, I think this one will take some beating.
I wonder how involved Paul was in the building back in these days.
Probably more of a management role by that time.

  • @grungebob the mod was done by Sounds Great back in the early 90's.
I missed the tone pot as I use it quite a lot so they put a push pull pot that does the sweet switch thing too.
Can't remember ever using it though as the tone pot dI'd all I needed.

    Top bloke mate, cheers!

i think I’m going to send the tuners off to PRS’ tech centre for the insides to be swapped over with phase II gears. Keeps me from drilling holes in it!

Royal Blue and Whale Blue IIRC - one had ‘fake’ binding the other didn’t. Can’t  remember which way round though....

@CountryDave  oh right, only ask as I have a ‘91 with sweet switch and I use the switch a lot.

@andy1839  didn’t know they could do that. The winged tuners are an arse.  Have they indicated costs to you?

    cheers guys

I’ve spoken to a bloke who works there who is one of only two that can do the mod.
Move pinged across a request for a quote and I’ll pm you with details of how much/turnaround etc.

MannMade do a set for $249 already modded.

No idea postage or import cost yet.

Just coz I love the way it looks here’s my ‘91 CU24, although the neck pickup cavity lists it as a ‘90.
