    Sorry to hear that.

We had to have ours PTS after she had a couple of strokes, and although clearly the most humane thing for her it was still very difficult.

    All,

    Winnie has left the building.

So sorry to hear this; it's been a real shit year for pet owners it seems

Thinking of you both - if you need to chat to someone about options for rememberance, feel free to PM me. I used a superb place for my cat, Simba, and got something very fitting for his ashes that looks great.

Sorry to hear this James and I've only just opened this thread for the first time. My really good friends had a similar situation a few weeks ago with their beloved hound Bonzo (as in Dog-doo-dah Band). There was nothing they could do except to help end his suffering. I've never had a dog but see lots of great friends going through the powerful bonding and then sad loss.....Sending you best wishes...

It sometimes strikes me as sad that humans live so long - when the animals we usually choose as friends don't. Most of us with pets will go through this several times, and it never gets easier. Anyone who thinks they're "just" an animal really doesn't understand why they're so much more than that.

    Update:

    Thanks for all the wishes.

I have spoken to Eddie at Fox Isles Gun Dogs in Yorkshire, who bred Winnie.

I have told him all about her life. He remembered me vividly and the litter in detail, as apparently every single pup was exceptional in intellect.

Winnie’s Mum was a choccie Lab called Tess, who worked to the gun, a field trail champ, and is dead. Her Dad was a snow white Standard Poodle called Rollo whose dad won best of breed at Crufts, and Rollo is old but still alive at 18 and retired- he was enormous as I saw him when I was there to pick Winnie up, like 30" at the shoulder which is seriously almost Gt Dane tall.

Eddie said that the dogs they produced were all remarkable and he's yet to get a litter as good, the best he’s ever had for intelligence, each one of the 8 of which he kept one and its subsequent pup, and, at the appropriate time, we could get one of Winnie’s cousins as he still has some of Winnie’s relatives although the trend and market has been for smaller dogs in recent years.

He’s sending us pics of Rollo and Tess, and he has also asked for pics of Winnie and the story of her amazing life.

I found this very cathartic and it almost completed the circle, if that makes sense.

I'd thoroughly recommend Eddie, even though he's relatively a small breeder and niche.

Oh and I have made an appointment to go see Rollo. I am gen finding that this has helped me greatly, and my other half too.

I'd been thinking of Ali as well and how this will affect you both.
Please pass on the same wishes to him as well.

It's great that you've managed to find that small hint at closure.
A lot of people might not have that chance.

You've done a bang up proper job looking after her and sharing Winnies life from day 1.
Try (if you can) to feel good about yourself for that if nothing else. I know it's not a good thing youre going through but  soon you'll need some pride in yourself.

    Smile when you can pal.

(If this comes across wrong I'm sorry. I'm off my Tits on medication, lack of sleep and abject misery on a hospital ward....Only when I smile!)

Unfortunately not - I'm sure Bouncer and Winnie would have got on famously. Kindred souls, although I am sure Winnie was the brighter and would probably have had Bouncer wrapped round her paw.
