Haven’t played my guitars for months. After watching Synth Britannia I’ve realised what I am missing!

In that case, you might be amused by the music documentary transmitted immediately before yesterday's repeat of SB - especially the bit where one contributor has to keep hitting his original Bulcha to make it emit any signal.

Gary Numan started as a guitarist. Found a synth still set up in a studio and - presto! However many pedals a person has a synth is THE sonic palette.

Watched that too - great wasn’t it! Love minimalism. I’ve got a few early scores signed by Steve Reich.

The various Korg Volcas are a lot of bang for the buck. Cheap as chips. I bought a Volca Bass I now also have the Keys. They look like toys but are full blown synthesisers.

I remember buying the cheapest Korg synth, the Micro Preset, in 1980 cost me a month's wages.

Warning: I had a few synths years ago and sold them. Now I know a bit more about music I bought a Roland Gaia a couple of years ago (from a forumite). It turned out to be a gateway synth, and now I have a serious addiction. :-/

I have the Prophet 6. It’s a stunning thing. And I can sympathise with the addiction... also have a Moog Sub 37 and an Oberheim Matrix 1000, and very much the desire to add several more.

Also Behringer’s copy of the Moog Model D is on the go, supply is scarce but 300 quid or so for a clone of the D is absurdly cheap.  Reviews are good too.

Ok we have to see some pictures here - I'm a Reich obsessive (nobody take that out of context)

    Gav, lets see some photos...

And to all in the thread - a basic explanation of the differences or what your synth does (for us newbies !)

    Differences schmifferences.

My analogue synthesizer programming technique could be neatly summarised by two lines from The Hitch-Hikers' Guide To The Galaxy radio series.

ARTHUR DENT: Have you managed to make sense of the controls?
FORD PREFECT: No. I just stopped fiddling with them.

I've been into synths since I was a teenager (yes, they did have them back then, you cheeky gits).  I used to annoy the hell out of the local music shops by going in every Saturday morning and playing (badly) every preset on whatever they had on display.  I've tortured ears with the original Junos, Korg PolySix, Six-One and Poly-800, DX7 & 21, SH101.  I owned a DW-8000 for a few years and stupidly sold it on.  I currently have a little Korg 707 I use as a Midi controller (the internal patches are pretty crap for any modern usage).

Once I discovered VSTIs - the world really opened up.  Right now, I'm about to buy the Korg iM1 to run on my iPad.  What a synth...  I thought the DX7 was king until I discovered the M1.
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

I'll swap you my original vintage Korg MS-20 for your original vintage guitar?

You see like the OP, I understand the ‘advancement’ to synths...

Im now at the stage where I want to add some weird sounds to my creatvie writing. And, importantly, I seem too work better with physical knobs rather than menus.

I waver between something like a Elektron Octatrack (tried it, just returning it, way too complex and unituitive for me), the MPC Live (really like this) to a Prophet 6 - which sounds amazing.

Daft question - can the Prophets record and loop ?

Any thoughts and recommendations for the OP and I ?

Prophet has a 64 step sequencer, but no, can’t record a loop per se.
